Muzzle needed.

Hi can anyone reccomend a place to purchase a lightweight Greyhound muzzle please? Our vets dont have one suitable and suggested I tried online which I did but the site they suggested doesnt stock them.

Our dog is a cross between a Greyhound and a Salukie so its a little more complicated too so we dont want to end up having to buy several before finsing the correct size as he has has problems with the 'lampshades' whereas even the largest one he can reach beyond the end yet due to the skinny neck even the tightest it will go (comfortably and safely of course) means he can shake it off easily same as the small ones.

Thanks in advance. :)

The Company of Animals sell Baskerville muzzles and will check the dog's measurements if you give them a call. The Baskerville Ultra likely won't suit, but the standard might.

Otherwise there are lots for sale on eBay - I'd find a seller with a phone number so you could call to check dimensions if needed.

    These Rescues sell them

or you could try Jan's Gifts.

I've used all three and all of them are really helpful and happy to answer any questions you may have :)

My lurcher is greyhound/collie and ordinary greyhound muzzles are too narrow for him. However, given the mix of your lurcher I'd expect them to fit.

If you're wanting to prevent your dog nibbling after treatment, I'd advise either using one of the semi closed in muzzles or taping up the end of an open weave muzzle.

Also, if your dog hasn't worn one before, they may need a little positive training to help them accept one. Over the course of a few days, you can try smearing a little bit of meat paste or cream cheese on the inside and letting them lick it off. Do this a few times before you try to fasten it on. Then try using it on a walk and feeding bits of treat through the muzzle as you walk along. Use a bright cheery voice and lots of praise. Most dogs will try and remove the muzzle using the nearest human thigh, so be warned you may gain a few bruises in the early days :D It took my boy about 3 weeks before he stopped fussing with it.

  • Hi thanks for the advice. He currently wears a 'no bite' muzzle but thats obviously not suitable for walks and longer use than a trip to the vet for a jab as a precautionary use.

The muzzle we need is to protect him from picking up all sorts from the pavements and field and eating it. Husband had a dog many years ago when he was a teenager who did this and the poor mite died of poisoning as someone had been lacing the scraps he purposely threw out with rat bait on purpose to cause harm to cats and wildlife (they were later fined for cruelty).

Its also for the safety of other dogs as ours has very recently been attacked before Christmas by a small dog who slipped its lead and it cost us in vet fees and on our insurance as we couldnt trace the other owner :(

To add to this our dog is still very traumatised and the week after Christmas he was being walked by Mother-In-Law (as she was sitting them while we were away) and another small dog was off its lead made a bee line for ours MIL shouted several requests / warnings for the owner to put their dog on a lead but they didnt and again our dog was attacked not only by the little dog but by its owner trying to kick our dog off his (our dog did have the no bite muzzle on so the little dog wasnt harmed our dog was traumatised though). Really shook MIL up too as the owner was yelling and causing an unecesary scene to all other dog owners to avoid MIL and the dog at all costs as they were dangerous killers and should be destroyed under the dangerous dogs act and poor MIL was trying to get our dog away from the area after the incident as calmly as possible as our dog was in shock and close to collapse with fear, she did give the insurance and vet details etc as the other owner was convinced the blood was from their dog despite ours being covered in it and not a speck on theirs and "we would be punished and pay for it" but nothing has come of it and nobody has come knocking.

We also have a Collie X Lurcher so to be on the safe side both will be muzzled from now on .... cue the sight of people crossing the road in a hurry and dragging their child and pushchair out of the way and up the dark alley to avoid us in fear of the muzzled rabid beasts .... sometimes theres nothing to be done to keep others happy and our dogs safe from an array of assumptive strangers looking for a doom n gloom story! ;)

Grrr why is it so often seen as the big dog's fault  Sorry to hear you've had this to deal with and hope your boy starts to feel less worried very soon. My whippet was rushed at and bitten repeatedly by a small fluffy (thankfully she was protected from injury by her coat) and when I told the owner what had happened they said "what, this little thing?" Can you imagine the fuss that would have occurred if my lurcher lad had decided to defend his pack mate and had a go at the small fluffy? Makes me so cross that some small dog owners can't see what their charges are capable of - they're still dogs, regardless of size!
There is a Jack Russell near to us who is always muzzled when out, as according to his owner he's a little sod. If only others would be as sensible.
My lurcher was muzzled to stop scavenging and it worked very well at breaking the bad habits. Oh and if people start avoiding you, take it as a positive. It's their problem, not yours and you're being the responsible one :D

  • Yes it makes me angry too especialy when I have to pay to repair my pet for someone elses ignorance!

I just couldnt beleive the attitude of a woman in the vet the other day. I was in there with our Greyhound X as he was having second half of his anual booster. We (my husband, me and dog) were Sat in the furthest corner nearest the wall as this is the best place to distract and keep our dog from trouble. Only ones in waiting area until a lady walked in with her 'small fluffy thing' so we held on tight to ours who was muzzled with the temporary one and our dog as usual was making a fuss wining and getting excited (more like aprehensive) at the sight of small fluffy. So she commented something about him eating hers for dinner and I said the muzzle was actualy to protect himself from self defence to small fluffies at which point the woman laughed and said exact same thing "what a little fluffy attack that big dog?" and I abruptly put her in her place by sayng well actually yes and I dont find it very funny at all having to pay out when my pet is injured from someone elses carelessness and not only has it cost us as they wernt insured we now have to deal with the after consequences of not only the expense (and our insurance will either not cover it or only pay half due to our dogs age) but the fact our dog is traumatised and now requires expensive therapy to prevent any further problems as we are responsible owners! Soon shut her up and she quickly changed the subject!

Is there a pets at home near you that sells the type of muzzle you need? - I know they normally do baskervilles. They do a fitting service where they can help you try it on the dog for the best fit - they'll even come out to the car if you can't take doggy into the store for any reason. Alternatively if you buy one to try and it doesn't fit, they will refund as long as it's not been used.

ours are all Greyhound and have these
    http://www.grweshop.co.uk/acatalog/Accessories.html
scroll down the page as they also do lurcher muzzles.
    for 'best'
and a Baskerville for walks out up the forest.
they are to protect small furries from my dogs as they will catch kill and eat them...
    have you seen this campaign?
    http://www.yellowdoguk.co.uk/
this is supposed to be for dog owners to identify that their dog needs space...
when we walk up the forest NONE of the little fluffy thing's owners seem to know about the yellow dog scheme so get all airated when I shout NO in a loud voice at their small furry as it rushes over to say HI.
"don't worry he's just being friendly" they shout at me as I haul my two around to face away from their dog and focus on me.
"Well, you won't mind it being eaten because mine aren't" I shout back.

but YES I get over-anxious mothers telling me that I shouldn't be walking my muzzled dog when there's children around.

  • Thanks its good to know its not just us having to face this!

The other irritant now you (FA) mention it is nobody with prams has the courtesy to say a simply thank you when we stand on the muddy verge to let them speed by dragging one kid and shoving another when our 2 dogs are sat as tightly to the kerb as is possible as heaven forbid their mod con 4 wheel drive pram gets the unlucky draw of the muddy kerb or puddled wall and protruding bush side of the path and not to mention the venemous vermin looks we get either! :(

I have 2 border terriers and harvey, who is nearly 3, has been attacked twice by staffy bulls off leads. He now wears a muzzle if there is another dog about as he will attack first no matter what size the dog is.

People do stare at him when we are out but I dont care. He is a loving dog but gets stressed easily now and Id rather people kept away from him than force him to endure being patted forcefully on the head by strangers or people bringing their dogs over to play.

Apparently a yellow bow or ribbon on the lead means to give the dog space but if no-one knows that it doesnt really help.

And why do people think all dogs want patting? We humans dont want strangers touching us so why should an animal.

You can buy them from Greyhound Gap, via their forum. They also do custom made collars and leads.
