  • Thanks for the advice, all. I shall take it on board and contact my local IAM group.

Is the IAM's 'Skill for Life' course the one to look at?

I save a lot more than £32 on insurance a year by having my IAM licence. I don't go through a broker, I follow the MSE advice.........

    Exactly my point!

You don't get anything special using the IAM Broker (ie the smoke and mirrors one)

It is the IAM Broker that requires you to keep up your £32 (minimum) annual fee to the IAM.

Yes, also take a read through Roadcraft - the police drivers handbook.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

Quentin - you quoted my post but I don't think you read it, have another look - I said go to the IAM broker at the END of your search - yes follow the MSE guide. THEN you go to them with the best price THEN they beat it. Did this for me 5 years in a row. Do you have any personal experience?

    I did read your post.

In order to use the IAM broker (according to the ts + cs), you have to be a current member of the IAM.

Thus to be cheapest they need to give you a discount in excess of the minimum £32 annual fee!

No. That would apply if that was the only benefit of being a member. If you receive other benefits, then the insurance does not need to be £32 less.

Well, there's the insurance discount, the magazine, the cheaper car hire, but you know all that already. I could go on, but there's little point, your opinion is already set and vocalised.

Change your instructor, but be aware, most are making it up as they go along as this is a fall back occupation normally taken up by people made redundant, long term unemployed, and people with no other skills other than a driving licence, who were you at school or Uni with who said "when I grow up, I want to be a driving instructor" it's normally a lifestyle change forced on someone and the only answer for an easy job is "You've got a driving licence dear, I think your a good driver, so become a teacher"

IAM training, normally on Sundays can be a fun day with interesting people, and if nothing else you will have a laugh, but don't take it too serious.
