Would you complain? (worn school jumper)

Options
Ok, so dd's high school jumper has developed a large hole on one elbow. Happened a couple of weeks before end of term.
School demands it is sewn up as it is breaking uniform rules- fair enough but will look really bad - so new jumper is needed.

But, should I take it back to the shop and ask for a replacement? Is it over the top to expect a school jumper to last all year - or at least more than 3 months?

(Never had this problem before, my old school jumpers were a slightly different nylon wool that never wore out and their primary cardigans are a different material altogether.)

Thanks!

You say that it happened a few weeks before term ended, which suggests that it tore (e.g by catching on something) as opposed to being the result of gradual wea and tear. If this is the case, then unfortunately I think that you are stuck. If it is just wear and tear, then it is worth taking it back. Did your dughter explain how it happened? If mended carefully, it needn't look terrible.

There is no harm in taking back to the shop and asking for a replacement. They can only say yes or no.

Sew on elbow patches could save you buying a new jumper.

I wouldn't expect a school jumper to last all year because I know what kids are like :D

    Thanks for the replies.

She didn't really say - just oh look at this and told me how lots of kids have the same problem. She mentioned a class mate had same issue and her mum took it back and was given another - so I guess it is worth a try.

I have always got away with the girls using the same cardigan all year - and usually for part of the second year - so it is a shock to me to think I might need to buy more than one a year ha ha ha.

I will pop by this afternoon and see what they say - worst comes to worse I will just have to put my hand in my dusty pocket and buy another ;-)

I think if it's something that other people are having a problem with and the child isn't likely to have been crawling around the floor causing it to rip I'd take it back.

You know your kids and if they are likely to have caused the problem. If it was my DD1's I'd be taking it back. If it was DD2 I'd be amazed to have got close to the end of term!

Your DD doesn't know how the hole appeared. You obviously hadn't noticed it in the previous weeks. A worn elbow would have looked a different colour and shown the shirt underneath.

Sounds to me like she caught it on something and a hole developed... not the shop's fault.

I also think you are being optimistic in wanting a jumper to last a whole school year.

We buy our uniform form the school itself and there was a dodgy batch where every jumper went under the arm and the stitching was loose around the cuffs.
The school wouldnt replace them for free, just reassured us it wouldnt happen in future.

They should have replaced them in that situation. The school should have got replacements or reimbursement from wherever they bought them. Being a school doesn't mean they can just sell faulty goods and not replace them for you.

Personally, I wouldn't take it back after 3 months wear.

Is it a knitted jumper or a sweatshirt-type? It might still be salvageable if it's knitted. Next time she tears a hole in it, best to get onto it before the hole becomes too large ;)
