Hmm, just found out that park not far from us is charging £655 for 4 nts in a caravan. I could do three Haven hols with that price!

The nearest Haven park is Golden Sands, approx. 2 hr 20 min away by car. A lot less than 3 hours though! Its either find a taxi/car to take us there and back, dog stays with us.

OR- We go to the Sea Shore one (better transport links) by Nat Express, leave dog in boarding for a week.

OR- Decide to stay in the same city for several years and just have trips out. Scuppered by the fact that I love my dog too much and would probably get another.

For this year, I think you've given up on using kennels too easily - IME most dogs enjoy being in kennels as they are pack animals after all.

In the longer term, there's no reason not to expect things to get easier. Your child won't be a toddler needing a pushchair for long, in a couple of years s/he will even be able to manage a small bag, leaving you with just a rucksack and the dog. Once you're working you should be able to learn to drive and run a car or at least have more disposable money to ease your problems.

Having pets is great ( I have 9) but they are something you choose to have and, like children, they do limit your options.

Parcel 2 Go is brilliant - next day delivery, very reasonable prices.

    That for luggage.

Otherwise - look at home sitters.

I went away for Mon_Fri over Christmas and had someone to stay in my flat to look after the dog and 4 cats. Way cheaper than kennels/cattery for my lot combined and total peace of mind.

Have you called your local mini cab company and find out about prices for various distances?

I took a taxi from Windermere to Preston on my way back as trains from Windermere were cancelled etc. The cost was £90.00 and it was one our journey. Few of use shared so ok but 3 hours trip there and back - you COULD go to New York for that

That's a bit defeatest of you Wiggy- for one Wiglet will be older so no nappies to haul and could even pull his own little case even in a year or two ...plus you could learn to drive....or move ....or makes friends with people who drive....or are ace pet sitters.....lots of things will change even in the next year . Just because it isn't that possible right now doesn't mean it will always be that way. Maybe dog socialization classes would be a good idea though - holiday or not for your dog ?

As with children then unfortunately you have to make sacrifices when you own a pet. We never had a holiday for 8 years because of a lack of decent boarding kennels. My eldest was 7 before they had a holiday due to the dog. It's not the end of the world. Holidays away from home are nice but they are not a must have, nor will your children suffer due to the lack.

I think it would have to be kennels this year unless you feel up to managing the train (I wouldn't with all luggage, dog and child). If I were in your shoes I think I would invest this years holiday cash in learning to drive then at least next year you could hire a car even if you don't own one. Or there are petsitters who actually move into your home but I dont suppose they are cheap.

I would want my dog on holiday with me (and I think you do to really). At two years old your child will not be aware of having a holiday and they are not essential; lots of outings and good times are what they remember and you dont have to go away for that.

A little one under 3 will enjoy lots of day trips almost as much as a holiday, if you make them special.
  • 40 mins should be affordable IF you agree a price with them beforehand AND are prepared to maybe go at a time when they're not busy (eg early morning etc)

Why not learn to drive & then you could hire a car ....

Ah, it seems unless I meet a nice helpful friend willing to watch my dog I'm going to have to put off any holidays.

I just looked at car hire- £140+ for 1 week and that's for a driver aged 24+. I thought about lessons but the £25 a week on income support isn't really possible. That's food and two bills for me! I pay a childminder to be able to do a placement to be more employable so that's the highest ticket thing I can squeeze out at the moment. Hello day trips :)
