I share your pain. I often wondered if I could get my bigger Cavalier discounted if I told them she was crossed with a cocker spaniel but I didn't want to risk being rumbled.

Two breeds of spaniels would still be classed as crossbreeds wouldn't they?

  • That's the same with every type of insurance. There are very few insurances that you're obliged to have, the rest is a personal choice and it's a myth peddled by the insurance industry that your life will collapse if you don't insure yourself up the yingyang.

If you're thinking about insurance you should calculate the likelihood of a risk manifesting as an issue, you should assess how severe the impact of that issue would be, i.e. what problems it would cause you if it happened, and you take into account the cost of insuring yourself against that risk and whether there are other ways you could pay a vet bill, e.g. loan, savings. Your own personality comes into to play too - how risk averse/cautious you are.

People need to know that it's a completely valid choice to not have insurance. Provided they've done their research, they should be free to choose whatever approach they like. As an aside and I appreciate that we're talking about pet insurance, I find it really interesting to think that the chances of you claiming on your contents insurance policy (if you have one) is 1 in 17,000. Most statisticians would deem that a negligible risk, not bother with the insurance and spend the money on wine instead.

    A good and valid point.

The only thing I would add is that if something happened to my home contents and I was uninsured, I'd be upset / inconvenienced / out of pocket for sure, but if something happened to my cat, I'd be devastated. Especially if something could have been done that I couldn't afford. I don't ever want to be in a position where I have to make that kind of decision, which is the sole reason why she's insured.

Now please excuse me while I go hug her and stop thinking about bad things happening to her. :o

We insured our GSD cross with Tesco for about £10 - £12 per month until the last year when it was £30.00 per month. She had over her 13 yr life about £5 k worth of vet treatment so £20 per month in savings wouldnt have come anywhere near covering what was required.

I would never have an uninsured pet again, and can definitely recommend Tesco.
