This one's actually nothing to do with the normal Gitdog antics, for a change.
Just been on petplan getting insurance quotes. Gitdog is an English bull terrier cross, probably crossed with staffie. If I put him in as a cross breed the insurance is about £20 a month, if I put him in as EBT which is the only other option, it's shooting up to about £65 a month.
I am truly shocked at the difference. Unfortunately I phoned to double check how to record him, and the calls on record, so I suspect if I go with them as they know he's part bullie that's the quote I'm going to have to go with. Too honest for my own good, that's my problem. I should have just put cross and left it at that - it wouldn't have been a fib, because that's what he is.

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Try a different insurer?0

I would, but I don't know who the good ones and who the "don't touch with a bargepole" ones are. I want a company who will pay up if needed without too much silliness - I know petplan are dear but I've had a good experience with them with previous mutt. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Argos are pretty good and give reasonable quotes (lower than Petplan) AND you can get cashback from Topcashback (and I think Quidco).just in case you need to know:

What did the person on the phone say?
Personally I don't see how you can put him down as a pedigree ie full EBT if he's not therefore would be going with crossbreedGrocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)
2016 Sell: £125/£250
£1,000 Emergency Fund Challenge #78 £3.96 / £1,000Vet Fund: £410.93 / £1,000

They said that if I couldn't tell them what he was crossed with they'd have to go with EBT - at that point I wasn't sure about saying staffie cross in case that hoiked things up even more. I thought that EBT staffie cross just has aggression connotations that insurers might not like, although he's the least aggressive dog I've ever had. As he's a poundie no one knows for sure, but I thought staffie and the vet agrees. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

I've got John Lewis insurance for my mutt, and it's £11/month. She's a small terrier cross. The option was for small/medium/large cross breed, and I didn't have to specify which breeds I think she is. Worth looking at their website perhaps?0

I did think about John Lewis but they're underwritten by RSA and I thought I'd read somewhere that anything underwritten by them tends to increase the premiums a lot year on year? All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

If he's not pure EBT, I too can't see why insurers would suggest that. He's a crossbreed, so I'd put him down as crossbreed!
One of my is Rottie and suspected GSD as the other cross. She was a private rehome so we can only assume that the owner "knew" - but even then, that may have only been what they were told. She's been down as crossbreed, and I've been claiming for a few conditions over the past 2 years with no issues at all.
Is he down at the vet as a crossbreed? I doubt that they'll particular remember having a phonecall with you about it (unless they made notes) and it'll be the vet history/notes they'll most likely refer to if you do claim.0 -
My vet wrote a note for me to send to Pet Plan explaining that in her professional opinion my rescue labrador was not a pedigree..
They accepted this and she is covered as a cross breed.
Hope this helps0 -
My boy's with the Coop so underwritten by Petplan but a hell of a lot cheaper, although the yearly cover isn't as high. My last girl was also covered by them and they paid out an absolute fortune for her with no problems, and my vet is happy to deal with them direct.
My boy's a pedigree too, and I only pay £16/month.0
