There are loads of FON APs. The real issue with them is poor range as they are just produced by home routers with no outdoor antenna. Plus a lot of people don't even realise/remember that they are providing a hotspot and may get freaked out if they see you skulking around by their front gate.
I'm not a BT customer but have been running a Fon router for some years which provides a hotspot - I put up an outside antenna to be friendly too but virtually nobody ever uses it. Running the router gives me access to any other Fon hotspot I care to use.0 -

I installed this O2 WiFi app for Android which after your first setting up will automatically connect anywhere there is a free O2 WiFi - certainly many if not all Maccy D's use O2.0

You have to open a browser every time you go into store. The tesco web page opens, and you click continue - then you are fully connected, and then all your non-web page connections will work.

I've tried to access "public" wi-fi a few times without much success (e.g. in Wetherspoons). I can just about browse web pages (after disabling various security add-ons), but can't get any other internet traffic flowing... :-/
Also, the connections I've used are incredibly slow and unreliable. I keep having to re-connect when the signal drops off every minute or so and it takes ages to load even a BBC News page... I guess watching YouTube would be out of the question!0 -
I like to sit in starbucks and use the wifi.0
