Crikey, if this is the kind of advice your friend is giivng out no wonder people are in debt, £100 week for 2 adults, rubbish, tell your friend she needs to look at the grocery challenge thread to see what people consider reasonable.

Yes, I'm going to send her the link to this thread and also keep my menu plans and spending log to show her. I think the budgets her organisation use are probably based on government figures regarding healthy eating.

I think part of using these high figures is to build in a safety net for people who are unable to obtain credit. Without having high figures used if someone's fridge, for example, broke down and they needed to get another they can't guarantee they'd be able to get one on freegle or cheap through some other source.

I think it's more a case of hoping that some people will put some money by as an emergency fund - as that is not something they are allowed to put money aside for - which personally I think is stupid.

just been updating figures for February. As I've spent really well in January, I've had to stock up my cupboards. My spends are:
    A*da £103.56
    AF £49.65
    A*ldi £5.49
    Wine offer £71.88

Hoping for good things from AF. Saying that, I had another 14 for tea on Friday and this weekend its my dads birthday, so we'll end up having 12 for tea on Sunday. Its cheaper than eating out though. I was calculating that since xmas I have feed at least 100people !!! That's the problem with big families!

    Anyway, sig updated

Back from a bit of shopping didn't have too much to get. Spent £3.50 in the market, £2.00 of which I should get back from my sister. Also spent £6.96 in Mr Ms but had a £5 voucher so only £1.96 from budget. Also spent £2 in Iceland on some loo rolls. So a total of £7.46 from budget.

I've updated my signature to show these spends.

  • I won't be starting the GC officially until 1 Feb but have decided to get into the swing of things. Tried my hand at homemade yogurt yesterday and was chuffed to bits with the results. One pint of full fat milk (50p) and a spoonful of yogurt I had in the fridge. Hey presto after a night swaddled in tea towels I have a pint of gorgeous creamy yogurt. The bonus is that there is no added sugaring it. Was shocked to find out they add sugar to low fat yogurt to improve the taste! Would rather have the calories from creamier milk.

Still on January thread until Feb 1st. Please can I reduce my budget from £360 to £340. This has been a long time coming. Should be plenty with it being a shorter month, even if it is half term half way through.
GC Jan £101.91/£150 Feb £70.96/150 Mar £100.43/150 Apr £108.45 app/150 May £149.70/150 Jun £155.15/150 July £89.90/£150 (includes food, toiletries and cleaning from 13th to 12th of each month. One person vegan household with occasional visitors)

  • NSD today, took lunch to work and for tea had spag bol, I made a huge pan at the weekend, only used 500g lean steak mince but added lots of veg and lentils and ended up with enough for spag bol for 4 people, enough to make 6 portions of lasagne, and the rest I added beans and seasoning to and got enough chilli for a lunch and a tea for both me and OH. Before I discovered this forum, the same amount of meat would have only made one meal for us. So not only am I saving money, we are much more likely to be getting our 5 a day now:T

I make yoghurt this way as well. We make a litre 3 times a week and have it with museli or fruit :j

I'm feeling down the last few days so I haven't posted or read much. I'm worried about how much I have spent already this month :(
