Lacto/dairy free - has anyone tried and how have you got on?

  • I've given up my dairy free test, little improvement so I got fed up with it. I will finish up my soya milk and will still buy almond milk because I like it :)
    Now I just hope the gluten free test also fails, I'd hate to find that's what I'm intolerant to :cool:

    Hi, I became vegan in January after watching the film Vegucated, and feel much better - which I think is mainly due to being dairy free (also watched Fork over Knives which explains why dairy isn't great from medical view). Anyway acid reflux is all but gone and I've lost over a stone (was a fair bit overweight). Have also been a lot more open to trying new foods and find unsweetened soya milk is fine in tea and coffee and any of the other milks (almond, oat etc) good for porridge.

    I don't know if its reducedy snoring (which was appalling according to DH) but will ask.

    Highly recommend no dairy from a health point of view, has really helped me.

    Yes the ones I had were plain :)
    Actually my OH didn't buy popcorn because it had some dairy products in it, so you are right it can be in unexpected places (like my chorizo sausage, had to go and buy another one, not as nice as the usual one...)

    This morning I woke up without a bloated tummy (and no associated noises that would let me OH know I'm awake... ;) )
    however I've also been eating only white bread for the last few days, will have to eat some brown bread again just to be sure that is not the reason, but happy not to have to rush to the loo either, for once :)

    Don't forget that some white breads are made with milk. Milk rather than cheese tends to cause more issues if you have issues with dairy which affect your digestion rather than just your sinuses. Also don't forget that many brown breads are just white bread with a tasteless "caramel" coloured dye.

    You are right all sorts of foods have dairy products added to them, (although I have to say all of the bread I've looked at didn't), going dairy free means looking at the list of ingredients and allergy information of everything before eating it.

    I don't know what brown bread you mean, maybe you can give an examples of which ones should be avoided? The ones I've seen are wholemeal breads made with (among other things) wholemeal flour, but no caramel.
    However I mainly make my own bread, it's the only way of avoiding all sorts of additives used in shop-bought bread.

    I think what you mean is the difference between dairy intolerance and milk protein allergy.
    As far as I know it's milk allergy that gives symptoms with sinuses and those who have it cannot have milk, including lactofree, but are fine with cheese etc.
    However cheese, particularly hard cheese, has less lactose than milk, so I'm no sure why it would cause more issues for those who are lactose intolerant and experience digestive symptoms?
    (I did my homework before starting this test diet ;) )

    Yup- you've got it :) Its more the milk and soft cheeses rather than the hard cheese (although I play it safe and stay well clear of both as I had such horrible symptoms).


    I think its mainly the cheaper types of bread, the typical "brown bread" basic loaves or bread rolls though I've no idea on what goes into the freshly made bread either and that bread isn't cheap so I can't say conclusively what bread has what in it, I just remember watching a documentary and also reading about that not very well known aspect of bread. Proper brown bread made with proper whole grains and fibre rather than bleached flour, lactose/whey/etc-type filler and dyed to appeal to the "healthier" of us isn't always as easy to find as one may think so just wanted to prewarn. I had a friend who thought she had cut out all dairy and was still having problems with her stomach, in fact she hadn't realised it was in her bread and even in the crisps she had been eating.


    I had thought you probably knew how widespread dairy ingredients are given how in-depth your posts were but just wanted to double check as you had mentioned bread and I know from my experience of looking through the ingredients of loaves of bread that derivatives of dairy seem to exist in far too many.
