Ok..just for you..
Again not answered, when she plugs in her ipod, is she able to open anything associated with it on itunes, she should be able to open up the latest back up, if she is unable to do that it is likely that the update on her ipod failed. When trying to use her ipod on the computer is it connected to the internet? It is most likely worth updating the ipod via wifi and then again attempting to use it on the computer.
And again, have you been able to use a different usb cable, does it charge the ipod okay?
What version of itunes is she running, looking at mine the latest version of itunes is 11.1.3 which was released a few weeks ago, I'm pretty sure I updated mine in late November.
I don't know if it is anything to do with your operating system, we have windows 7 at work (business not home premium) and we have found that a lot of devices simply don't work and are unable to connect properly, including many phones and digital cameras and we have had to start downloading the software for these devices after each windows update, which as you can imagine can be a bit of a pain.0 -
Ok, I'll try to be clearer. iTunes is not recognising the device, it doesn't exist for iTunes, it can't see it, there is no device listed on iTunes when it is plugged in, you can't sync it as iTunes doesn't realise it's there.
We don't have any other Apple devices available at the moment, ergo, we don't have another lead. It would have been one of the first things I would have checked and would have mentioned in my first post if we had.
However the iPod is nearly new and as Windows can see it and transfer data via windows explorer, I don't think the lead is an issue. In addition, five minutes before the iTunes update, it was connected and working fine. However, once iTunes updated, it stopped being recognised.
And again, as originally stated, it's an iPod nano, it doesn't have wireless.0 -
What "data" are you able to transfer to/from the iPod using Windows Explorer?1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?0 -

Anything - it acts just like external hard drive. I'm just trying it on my desktop PC which I'd forgotten has iTunes on it, although it's version 10.1! That version will recognise it, but states it needs to be updated to do anything. I might update it and see what happens.
But at least we can finally rule out the cable.
Edit to add, the iPod isn't showing up on iTunes on the desktop either now that iTunes is updated. I'll have to leave it for now, but I'll try the earlier version that Browntoa suggested later and see what happens.0 -
Not necessarily. I had a similar problem, with my iPhone being recognized by Windows (and therefore I was able to access photos etc from the camera roll in File Explorer) but iTunes refused to even acknowledge it existed, it just didn't show up. I bought a new cheapo cable for 99p from fleabay and the problem was solved.at least we can finally rule out the cable.poppy100 -
Please read what was posted. I tried the ipod & cable on another computer with an older version of itunes and it was recognised. Only once that was updated to the current version did itunes again fail to recognise it.0

Could the extraneous data that you copied/moved outwith iTunes be the problem?0
-
No, as the problem started long before I transferred anything.0

Finally found the answer on a geek forum- format the nano in Windows Explorer. Straight afterwards iTunes recognised it, updated it and all is now well.
Thanks to all those who tried to help.0
