You can switch them off from the User CP

You can't switch them on to do the merges and then turn them back off again ?

Sorry to bump Daza, but you can select who to receive PMs from - I have PMs set so I can only receive PMs from BGs and a very small selection of MSE users (I too used to receive occasional unpleasant messages after spotting duplicates).

It may be an idea for future use, as you seem to be very good at spotting duplicate competitions

set pm's/contact info to 'contacts only'
then add people to your contacts that you may need to pm, me and Dalkirst for example
