Beng in a calculating mood, compared cost of Orijen to Acana

Orijen Fish at 260 gram per day comes up to 1.60 per day so 48 per month

Acana Pacifica at 270 per day comes up to 1.31 per day so 39.40 per month

Both daily allowances calculated based on their calories value and Zara's ideal weight of 36kg and the calculator Krylr kindly linked with prices for food from Zooplus

    Orijen I feed now

    http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dry_dog_food/orijen/orijen_adult/49353

Acana Pacifica my friend feeeds her dogs

    http://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/dogs/dry_dog_food/acana/grain_free/132052#feedingGuide

Interesting that Orijen Senior I would need to feed 280 gram per day as its calories per kg is lower than Orijen Fish

To summarise using the calculator (brilliant find Krylr :))

Zara needs 1029 calories per day to be 36kg

Orijen Fish that I feed her has 3980 cal per 1 kg so 398cal per 100gram

So she needs 260 gram of Orijen per day if fed nothing else

BUT she likes her sardines and I am just looking at the tin. It says:

    120 gram
    drained weight 84 gram
222cal per 100 gram so 84 gram will be 187 cal

187 calories Orijen is 47 gram so if she was having a tin of sardines per day I would need to take off 47 gram of Orijen off her allowance and feed her only 213 gram Orijen per day so 71 gram per meal fed 3 times per day

I wish I could calculate oil calories in sardines as used to give her whole tin with the oil but the calories on the tin are given per drained weight...

    Hmmmmmm

Now, the coconut oloil I have at home (Biona Organic Coconut Virgin Oil - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Biona-Organic-Raw-Virgin-Coconut/dp/B005GUU680/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388791752&sr=8-1&keywords=biona+coconut+oil ) says 100gram = 857kcal

is kcal the same as calories? EDIT - yes, it is the same, found it now

    Lost here...

How many gram in a tea spoon? Not gonna weigh coconut oil... sighhhh Shall I assume 60 cal?
A tablespoon of any oil sets you back around 120 calories.

If so, 60 cal of orijen would be 15 gram which again I would need to take off her daily allowance

so 60 cal from 1 teaspoon of coconut oil
plus 187 calories from 84 gram of drained sardines
total 247 calories from her 1029 calories per day - left 782 calories for Orijen

if 1 kg (1000 gram) of Orjen is 3980 cal then 782 calories is 196 gram per day

Finally daily food allowance for Zara

EDITED after Krylr's correction re tea spoon of coconut olil calorie content

1 teaspoon coconut oil 40 cal
84 gram sardines drained 187 cal
    201 gram orijen 800 calories
total 1027 calories - so 2 cal spare for a drop of oil from not properly drained sardines hahaah

    Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu :)

But - does it makes sense? Nutrition wise?

    3 teaspoons in a tablespoon - so 40 cal rather than 60 :)

OMG - all my life I was sure there is only 2 tea spoons in a tablespoon....

    so 20 cal spare?

    :D

I know myfitnesspal, used it before, thanks - but what I really want is:

" a vegan 2;5 daily meal planner recipes book for the fasting days only for just one person, each with a photo, taking no more than 15 min to prepare and minimum ingredients that do not cost a bomb and are easy to find "

I have a feeling this has not been written yet ;)

just raided amazon - either recipes for a family of 20, or for single people but ingredients cos like for a family of 20, or no photos or general receipe book for all days and I only want for the fasting ones or not vegan but vegetarian with lots of eggs/dairy etc etc..

    buuuuu

    rant over :)

If you put in "vegan 5:2 recipes" into your search engine, lots of things come up. I tried copying some links for you but my gadget won't let me do multiple links.
  • Fingers crossed the lower amounts work BUT be prepared to try a food swap if it doesn't

I reduced Maisie's kibble down & down and only managed to shift 0.5kg off her in 4 months :(

She was hungry (really hungry) all the time and scavenged everything in sight

Eventually I had to switch foods (not done lightly due to her colitis) and - have managed to find one that suits her, she likes, doesn't upset her tum & seems to keep her reasonably full

    Result = 3.8kg loss in 4 months :T

Sardines .... high in fat so I did cut these out totally when I was trying to shift the weight off her but she does now get once a week again

I've read this with interest as it sounds like the exact same problem I have with one of my dogs. She is 51kg and really should be about 46kg. She was overweight when I got her from rescue, and I have tried everything, but cannot get much weight off her! Her thyroid test came back fine.

You probably do this already, but the vet told me you should feed for the weight the dog should be, not for the weight the dog is. So I weigh her food and feed the amount for a 45kg dog. She is on a light version of Arden Grange. I've cut out treats almost entirely, and she is getting an extra walk per day compared to my other dog. Nothing seems to help!

We tried hydrotherapy early last year but then I had some health problems that put a stop to it, so we might take that back up again this year.

I'm going to try the veggies suggestion and see if it helps. I'll be interested to hear also if it makes a difference for Zara. :)
