Pregnant but not prepared

Hi all,

I wasn't really sure what sort of title I should put.

Well today I did I decided to do a pregnancy test after feeling very tired and moody the last few days. The test is positive.

The problem is that I haven't prepared my body as I did with my first one. I am sick with worry because I have been taking anti depressants and vitamins for the hair, skin and nails.....during this time I became pregnant. Appararently the predictor test is as accurate as a doctors but I will also get one done with them. I am worried because I may have damaged the baby? because of the medication I was on.....I have now stopped and from tomorrow I will start to take pregnacare. Am I to late.....what can I do if anything......I don't drink and have never smoked and I'm bascially sick with worry because I have been take vitamins and medicines not suitable for pregnant women.

Has anyone been in a similar situation? Was the baby okay? What advice did you doctor give you?

I would really appreciate some help here...PLEASE. Thanks

Firstly, please don't worry. Many medications say unsuitable for pregnant women as their full effects simply haven't been tested, and not that there is any specific threat. It's basically a catch-all to cover the producers of the supplements, in case of anyone trying to sue them! (Think about it! It's the same with rollercoasters, lol!)

In the case of your antidepressants, I wouldn't reccomend not taking them as this will be a lot more detrimental to your health. I would suggest you chat to your GP, in fact, have you thought about calling NHS direct to ease your mind?

I hadn't thought about calling NHS direct but I will. In the past they have always referred me to my GP! Incidently I work for the NHS I don't feel comfortable asking about this at work considering I have only been there for 2 months! Thanks for your thoughts.

please don't suddenly stop any medication prescribed by your GP without consultation, especially antidepressants. Do start on a folic acid supplement but try not to worry too much about the rest - most of us have done things unknowingly even when trying to have a baby so you're not alone in panicking. And congratulations

Don't panic!! Wait until you see your doctor before you stop taking any anti-depressents.

I fell pregnant whilst taking anti-depressents. As soon as I found out I went to my docs and he took me off them immediately, as there had been no tests done on this particular drug with pregnant women.

My now 4 year old didn't suffer any obvious ill effects :j

    Good luck and congratulations!

I Am Trying For A Baby And Stopped Taking Antidepressants Before I Started Trying. But My Doctor Has Tried To Convince Me To Restart Taking Antidepressants, Despite Trying To Conceive.

We Can All Say Don't Worry, But Part Of Pregnancy Is A Whole Heap Of Worry. Go And See The Dr But Please Please Don't Get On The Internet And Start Looking Up Things For Yourself, From Experience I Know It Can Make Things Worse And Have Contradicting Information.

As a Midwife I can only say see your Dr as they have all your information and can see the bigger picture with regard to your current meds etc. What you do need to do is start and take the folic. You are not the first to be in this situation, and won't be the last. NHSD will only refer you to your Dr, and so just make an appointment with your usual care provider.

the very early stages of pregnancy are cell division blah blah(science stuff), the chances of any impact are extremely small(we asked a similar question as we fell pregnant soon after some medical procedures so there was an oustide chance it was still in the blood etc. and they said not to worry). The amount of people who fall pregnant and yet may smoke/drink without realising until 2 weeks later when they have a late period etc. The main point is that you are now aware and already working on it and you can't do anymore than that. Good luck.
  • Blimey BettyBoop, your life really does seem like a rollercoaster doesn't it?!?!?!

Get yourself to the doctors as soon as you can, they will put you at ease. Whats done is done you can't change anything but if you start to make changes now everything should be ok.

I Just wanted to echo what the others have said. Try not to worry! I know that is much easier said than done but the chances are your baby will be fine. And what is done is done, so the important thing now is what you do from this point on.

So go see your Dr, start taking the folic acid and most importantly try to look after yourself. ;)
