Thanks everyone. I have just caught up with this thread. I appreciate all your help. I will try farmfoods as there is one near me. No Netto of Lidl for miles, unfortunately. I will also have a try at making it. Thanks again.Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination:beer:

I've been using condensed milk for ages to make chocolate caramel squares, but didn't do them very often due to the expense (which I feel I could justify more if they lasted a bit longer than five minutes around here
) Then I tried the Crunchie-a-like toffee from the (brilliant) wartime thread that's currently on the go.
It met the standard I'd usually expect from my level of culinary expertise, ie nothing like expected and certainly nothing like Crunchie:) However, it was *just* like the caramel filling I somehow manage to produce for the chocolate shortbread, only a sight cheaper. I'll probably use this instead of the condensed milk in future - I think the required texture is achieved by being too chicken to let the mixture bubble for long enough to risk torching a hole through the bottom of the pan.
As if this place hasn't made me fat enough alreadyEek! Someone's stolen my signature! :eek:0 -
Condensed milk is on offer at Lidl's next week - 2 tins for £2. I think it's usually £1.20 a tin.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0

Just found your post Myrtle, do you think your recipe will work with the post I put on the slow cooker thread regarding making caramel in the s/c?

I make my own condensed milk all the time and use it in any recipe that calls for tinned CM- no problem.
My recipe is easy peasy for quantities.
1 cup powdered milk
2/3 cup sugar
1/3 cup boiling water
3 tsp marg or butter.
Whisk for 3 mins.
If I want it caramelised for say, banoffee or caramel squares, I just put it in a saucepan over a low heat and stir continuously until it is a nice caramel colour.
BTW, if you buy the tinned stuff, don't boil it in the tin. Apart from being dangerous, who wants to use all that gas? Open it and just do it in a saucepan while stirring. Takes minutes. Definitely cheaper.Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal. These

Thanks for the recipe Rosie.
Did you see my post about making caramel in the slow cooker?

I don't want the faff of cooking it on the hob so I will try your recipe in a jar in the slow cooker.0 -
I've never tried doing it in the SC. Let us know how it turns out and I may just give it a go. As I say, I have found that mine behaves the same way as the tinned stuff, in the recipes I use it for, but don't blame me if yours separates in the SC or summat!!!!!Father Ted: Now concentrate this time, Dougal.
