I love my SKODAOCTAVIA DIESEL ESTATE 1.9 TDI PD Classic 5dr
    55mpg
    VED is £125.00 12 months
it's waaaay better than the C5 I chopped in part x for it.
one tip I did get off here was to go and stand at a minicab office/rank and look at the cars that are being driven by the cab drivers... that'll tell you more about the vehicle's reliability and running costs than any recommendation.

What's the point in that comparison? He could buy a Ford Fiesta 1.0 and save even more, but if he would rather have a car that happens to be more expensive to run then its moot again, isnt it?

The point of that comparison is that this is a money saving website, and suggesting that the OP can either save £300 straight away, or increase the budget by £300 is a difference worth noting.
The next part of the comparison is simple. The OP's spec for the car was a 4-5 door with a CD changer, climate control, etc, and a car he had considered was the CX-7. I found a car which is faster, more economical and cheaper to run than the CX-7 and ticks the boxes for his spec.
What was wrong with doing that? I answered the OPs requirements. Isn't that what we're supposed to do?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

I see you've ignored the first part of my post - why would the increased VED burden affect his outright budget? He's already said the increase is of little importance to him and is therefore unlikely to make any difference to what he's able to pay for a car, and even if it was, VED is an ongoing cost of car ownership and shouldnt be included in the budget for purchase.

Either way you look at it the increase in VED is irrelevant to the discussion in this guy's case, so its disingenuous you keep bringing it up as a concern when discussing his options.

sinbad, are you going to help the OP and suggest a car that suits, or just pick apart people who are trying to help the OP?

I "ignored" the first part of your post, because in it you suggested a Vauxhall Corsa (no specific model, engine, etc), which clearly does not fit the OP's requirements, also you described a £300 payment as "periodic". If the car has no VED on it, then the OP will need to pay £450 to drive a CX-7 off the forecourt, so a payment made at the time of purchase is something that needs to be budgeted for.

I made a comment on the Mazda as its the only one I have any experience of - you keep raising irrelevent points based on costs the OP said aaaages ago he doesnt care about.

Jeez, talk about something going over your head - I didnt 'sugest' a vauxhall corsa, I was using it as an arbitrary example of a cheap car to highlight how ridiculous it was to reccommend/rule out cars to the OP based on differences in running costs he'd already said werent a concern to him.

It needs to be budgeted for, the same way it needs to be budgeted for every year you run the car. But its a recurring cost, not something you should include in the upfront purchase budget. Besides, as we've been over a hundred times already, the guy who asked the question has already said he's not bothered about paying extra VED on one car compared to another, so long as it fits his criteria, so this point is well and truly moot anyway.

Now are you going to let this go, or keep making an issue about something that the person who fielded the question has already said doesnt matter?

I haven't made it an issue.
I've suggested a car that fits the OP's budget and requirements and explained why.
Are you going to help the OP with a useful suggestion, or just continue being negative?

Define a bit of poke? The two cars the OP mentioned(apart from the st2-ps you really want a st3) I wouldnt describe as having poke. The vrs is a car with poke IMHO but what does the op think?

Honda? Is the op a pensioner?

never driven a civic type R have you?

And even still, I'm 28 and have a 2008 Honda Civic with 2.2 diesel engine. It's got space for 5 adults when i go to the football with my friends, got a large boot so when I go on holiday with the missus it isnt a squeeze (she doesnt pack light) and its damn quick without being rediculous so when i wish to put my foot down it moves.
Not to mention £125 a year tax and good reliability.

Please don't tell me you're the type of car bore who gets his information off Top Gear? All french cars are rubbish with 5 reverse gears? only cars worth buying are German? Real drivers would ONLY buy RWD? People who use public transport are not worth the air they breathe?

i did specify 5 door and the type r is only 3 :-)

also with around 5000 miles PA diesel is not being looked at

i want something where i dont have to think and plan the overtake, the mondeo has no go between 30 and 60

I wasnt recommending the type r (although it would solve your overtaking issue!) purely responding to the claims that Honda's are for pensioners - which i find laughable really...

I'd say again about the Octavia. 2 of my friends (both 29) have just bought VRS diesels (I understand you want a petrol) and I am pretty impressed with them. One has an estate and the other a hatch, both are massive inside
