car suggestions

Hi All

planning to change my 2003 Mondeo Ghia X in the next few months and after ideas.

criteria are 4 or 5 doors, bit of poke and decent boot. Only used for <5000 miles per year so its petrol and not fussed on MPG to much. I have climate control, electric everything and 6 disc system on the mondeo, so would like to retain.

Like the look of the Mazda CX7, only concern is the turbo if anything goes wrong, and the Peugeot 3008 but at a 1.6 think may be underpowered. Wife says no more Fords so i cant have the ST2 i really fancied :-)

open to suggestions from the floor, with a budget up to 8k inc part ex my car

Doesn't the CX7 have crippling VED?

£450a year or so, my mondeo is £230 so its only another £200

    £4 a week is not crippling :-)

Guess i consider that to be a lot of sunk cost on a sub 5K miles a year car.

Then again i think VED should just be rolled up into the cost of fuel but that's a different discussion.

I can't see the 1.6 peugeot having a lot of poke so i'd guess that would be out.

    How about an octavia VRS?

£450 is cripling when you consider that many cars with a bit of poke are less than a third of that - mine is £100 a year VED, which leaves me an extra £350 a year to spend on other things.
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

The OP has already said that he doesnt consider an extra 200 (approx) a year to be a big deal, so in this instance its not crippling.

In fact I dont know many people who would consider 200 quid a year 'crippling', especially if they're forking out thousands on the car involved.

I personally wouldnt go for the Mazda because I found the interior very cheap/low quality to look at and touch.

they do the THP version on the 3008 0-60 under 9 seconds, so getting better

I dont like the look on the civic, octavia is a maybe, or even the Mazda 6 2.5

An extra £300+ per year compared to other cars may not seem much, but it means your budget is either £8000 or £8300. If you then consider a car with a lower insurance group than the CX7, well that could be another £100 a year saved (or more).
Let's say the OP keeps the car for 5 years, there's £2,000 saved, or 25% of the purchase price.

    Mazda CX-7:
    Insurance group 33, VED band L, 27mpg, 0-60 in 8s.
Compare to, let's say, Skoda Octavia 1.8TSI:
    Insurance group 22, VED band G, 41mpg, 0-60 in 7.9s

    And here's one for sale:

No it doesnt - The OP isnt concerned about the VED (which is a periodic and not upfront payment anyway, so shouldnt be included in the budget) so why would it impact how much he can pay? If we're going down this road where do you draw the line - The CX7 would likely be more expensive to service than say, a Vauxhall Corsa too - would you take that difference off the initial budget too?

This is all moot anyway as the OP has said the extra VED makes little difference to him.

What's the point in that comparison? He could buy a Ford Fiesta 1.0 and save even more, but if he would rather have a car that happens to be more expensive to run then its moot again, isnt it?
