    18yr old?

Have you checked quotes? Don't just assume a small car will be cheaper to insure, they can attract a huge insurance premium because they're more popular with the kids and thus more likely (statistics wise) to be involved in a crash.

We bought our 18 year old son an 06 reg Peugeot 307 1.6 petrol in the summer for £2800. Insurance in his name was £950. A 1.8 petrol Mondeo was about £1400 to insure. Smaller hatchbacks weren't any cheaper than the Peugeot to insure.

So keep the honda and buy one hatchback. That way you'll only be forking out for one car.

We have now moved on to this idea.

    Admiral.

The car is insured in his name with my wife and myself as named drivers. Adding us knocked about £500 off the cost. It probably made a difference that he had held a full licence for over a year as well.

Yes I think it does help, may hang on for a year for Sam. £1k is doable but when you are looking at £2.5k its a huge amount.

    Thank you for replying.

I agree. We had set a total budget of £4k and were very pleased to be able to spend £2.8k of that on the car and still have just enough left in our budget to tax it and fill it with petrol. :)
