Hello

We are hoping to part exchange our 1.8 Honda for two small cars micra, corsa etc, with low car tax, insurance etc.

We are paying cash, I was wondering how much bartering we would be able to do, to get more for the honda, or money knocked off the other two cars.

The honda is probaby worth about 4.5k now and we are hoping to spend about £7k each on the two cars.

THANK YOU :j

Paying cash isn't a plus point.

You'll end up paying screen price for both.

Who valued your car? You may not get that for it.

Wow, i didn't know a 1.8 Honda would cost several grand to tax and insure!!!

Seriously...... If you just want a new car, then go get something special, not some piddly gutless hatchback. If your really trying to save money, just stick with what you have.

You mean to run don't you?

Any new car will need tax and insurance.

If you are trying to save money, but want two cars, just get a tiddly little car as well as the Honda. Then use the tiddler for shopping and the Honda for long trips where you need the comfort/space and it will do reasonable MPG.

By the time you have bought a tiny replacement, you would need to drive many thousands of miles before you start to see a saving.

Human nature says once you buy the car it is dead money, and your costs are just the fuel in the tank insurance and tax, but economically you have to factor in purchase and depreciation.

    To answer the questions:

    1. You won't be able to do a lot to maximise the sale value of your car, selling it privately is the best way to get most for it but that's also more hassle and will only result in a few hundred extra at best.

    2. When buying cars, if you're getting them from a dealer then you can sometimes play two dealers off against each other to save a few hundred. Again, results won't be huge but a few hundred might be achieveable.

Paying cash is not going to get you a bigger discount as the dealers usually get a back hander from the finance company if they can get you on a finance deal. It might be worth your while doing this however, if the savings are good enough and you can pay the finance off early, do the maths with what figures they give.

I've mystery shopped car dealers for a few years now and believe me it's tough to get much of a discount but finance is usually one option that gets them willing to haggle.

    Thanks for your advice.

We only have 1 car at the moment and want 2 small cars.

The honda is also too expensive to insure for our 18 year old son. We want something he can drive too.

When you are trying to insure an 18 year old on a honda, yes it does cost thousands!

I think I will stick with the piddly gutless hatchback.

Thanks for your advice ... I think....

Personally i'd be sticking the 18 year old in a £500 fiesta or micra rather than a £7k one.

    18yr old?

Have you checked quotes? Don't just assume a small car will be cheaper to insure, they can attract a huge insurance premium because they're more popular with the kids and thus more likely (statistics wise) to be involved in a crash.

So keep the honda and buy one hatchback. That way you'll only be forking out for one car.
