Faulty shoes from Clarks

Hi,
I paid £90 for a pair of men's shoes from Clarks in October, but the heel broke about 6 weeks later. Two cobblers (an independent and a high-street chain) said they couldn't repair, but advised I return them to the retailer because it appeared to be a "manufacturing defect".
Clarks kept the shoes for a week, then offered to refund only 50% due to them showing signs of wear over-and-above the fault. Should I just accept that, or take my claim to the Small Claims' Court?
I asked for the manager to put their "final offer" in writing, but he said they don't do that as a policy. Am I justified in being annoyed at the wasted bus journeys and time spent on the phone trying to sort this out?
Any advice please?
Thanks.

I would also be annoyed and expect more than 50% as you appear to have evidence of a manufacturing defect. Do you have the cobblers' reports in writing?
If so I would either send a letter to head office enclosing the reports and asking for a full refund plus expenses (bus fare, stamps); or go down the small claims track and send a letter before action.
If not, get that first.
Managed to get through that reply without a gratuitous "cobblers" remark.0 -
50% is a raw deal.
By example, I purchased a pair of Cat boots for £120.00 about 1 year ago. The stitching were substandard and thus they fell apart.
The shop I brought them from folded, so I emailed Cat. They gave me a voucher for £100.00.0
