Picked up motorbike today.....with very wet hands!

OH picked up his Honda today and rode it well over 150 miles home mostly in the rain.

The Richa waterproof gloves he had bought did nothing and his hands were wringing wet by the time he got home. Surely that's not right?

Shouldn't the gloves have kept his hands dry or even very slightly damp in the worst case scenario? They really are very wet.

I think we should take them back tomorrow but OH says waterproof might not mean waterproof.  Am I being unrealistic?

Hmm...there's several types from full leather to a Goretex type.

I'm with you that waterproof means exactly that.

OTOH, I have full leather boots I wear at work. My feet get extremely hot and even though I'm inside, my socks have got damp. Disgusting I know but could it merely be sweat?

Definately not sweat, the gloves are sodden through and through. They're not leather but material (*actually scrap that, they are mostly soft leather*) and the tickets etc say they are waterproof, (not water resistant).

They weren't the dearest in the shop but I'd expect better for the £50 he paid for them.

Your OH needs a pair of muffs, slipping your hands into a pair of muffs in a crowded car park may not look that attractive to other bikers but in wet weather and winter a quality muff does wonders for the hands.

Few motorcycle gloves are 100% waterproof, some will even do a good job of turning your hands a purple/black colour as the dye runs.

It's what he can come to expect, unless he chooses muffs of course.

Sounds like something I can take the mick about. :D Will go do a search to find out more.

Years ago, when I did a lot of biking, I eventually settled on a pair of gloves that I knew would let water in, working on the same theory as a wet suit in diving. Don't know if I'm making sense, but the thin layer of water actually kept my hands warmer than they would have been. Worked for me.
That said, if I'd paid £50 for a pair of gloves that claimed to be waterproof, that's exactly what I would expect.

Most gloves leak round the wrist - did he have them over or under the jacket cuffs? If over, thats why they are sodden ...

As long as he didn't let water in down his sleeves, he should have been dry. I used to have some nice gloves (lost 1 !!!) and they were waterproof thinsulated. I'd take them back.

As Markyt says, the usual way to wear waterproof gloves in the rain is to tuck the sleeve inside your jacket cuff so the water travels up your arm instead ;).

IME cheap waterproof gloves are mainly cheap first and waterproof second, if that. Then again with the weather we had down here in the SE yesterday even my usually waterproof Goretex jacket threw the towel after about two hours...

Ah...right. Ok, gloves were on the 'wrong' way then. OH had them over his cuffs so the water would have run down his arms as said above. So simple I'm embarrassed it needed pointing out.

He's away to get a cover today from the same place he got his kit from, (the place we got the bike from yesterday sold them but only if you wanted a small  ) and although he's not taking them back just yet, he's going to mention to the bloke who served him about the gloves and see if they should be keeping his hands dry (er) if he wears them the right way that is. ;)

    Cheers guys.

Heh. There is only one way that me and the others who posted have found that out :-)
