ok, sorry to be taking this thread off topic, but i said you can't set up DDs on and Deano says you can. then F&NC says you can't, but you can set up CPAs and not DDs, and Deano agrees, is that right?

if we can set up DDs on Credit cards that is a good cashback earner.

if we can't, but we can set up CPAs that generate cashback/points that is a good earner too

    can anyone confirm?

and i think you have some good answers to your original query Deano:)

You can set-up credit card CPA for many utility bills, but there is normally an incentive to use direct debit instead -- maybe £40 off per year or something. Most companies want you to be on direct debit, making other payment methods more expensive.

Of the three payment methods standing order, direct debit and CPA only CPA can be paid from a credit card.

    I don't think that's too technical.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply, I work for a High St bank & you can, but companies don't advertise it because they get charged 19 pence for each transaction. If you have a good enough reason they will allow it as my mate has a few on his. The big problem is that majority of utility companies don't accept Amex and that's why I ask about an alternative like MC or Visa.

Worrying state of training in high street banks

CPA and DD are not the same. CCs attract a percentage fee not a flat rate - thats debit cards. All merchant fee charges are individually negotiated and can vary massively. Direct Debits also incur costs to the company, normally there are license fees, submission and per item fees.

AmEx acceptability will depend on what sort of places you go to. Certainly if you fit in their demographics then the majority of places will accept it and you can always get a second card for the rare places that dont. If you really arent into their target market then you may struggle more.

You say Avios or equiv? Who are you wanting to book with? What class are you wanting to fly? Where in the US are you flying to?

Assuming you are wanting to go business class I'd personally prefer Virgin Atlantic than British Airways, particularly between LHR & JFK, as their Upper Class and lounges are significantly above that of BA. Of cause for credit cards you are really limited to either AmEx again or the MBNA/Virgin Money Duo Card but with a sign up bonus of only 3,000 miles -v- 20,000+ for the Amex card it isnt going to get you as far.

Yes, they do. Although you may lose direct debit discounts etc with some firms.

It was a bit naughty on my part. Especially as my previously inside knowledge can occasionally be dated these days.

    But I enjoyed it.

Only if the mortgage lender will accept payment this way.

I'm not aware of any that do.
