Wondering if someone can give me some advice, or guidance you could call it, we are in a 3 bedroom council property and we was looking at getting one of them loft rooms so my eldest boy will have some space we have been quoted round about £3000 this is basic loft ladder, flooring window electrics and light,
question is can i have done even though its council, i have rang the council and they gave me a website to read and from what i can make out i dont need planning permissions but building regulations,
as anyone done this within a council property, i have tryed asking family n friends but they seem to know nothing about it, so feeling tad apprehensive now but i need extra space
many thanks for reading

If it is to be used for sleeping it will need to conform to building regs and fire safety. A ladder will not do that and it won't get done for 3k as floor will need strengthening and stairs etc fitted.Have a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0

Plus fire doors, how are you off for head height?
I can see the floor joists and staircase costing £3k.0 -

That's not allowed. The room would be for storage only. I doubt the council will let you convert it and if they did they may insist you use their trades.
Where is the window going? On the back? Do you know it needs to double as a fire escape.0 -
If you do manage to get them to allow you to convert the loft into an additional bedroom, would this then mean you have more bedrooms than the current rules say you need?0

how many adults & children do you have in the house ? as i thought the council normally size the house to a family sizeI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0 -
Also check your tenancy agreement. If you make changes, you may be expected to restore -or pay for the council to restore - the house to the layout as it was when you moved in.0

thanks, sorry my first post wasent too clear
i dont wnt to use as room, just storage n somewhere, where my boy can have his own space to play on his computer n can go do homework as he shared bedroom with his 3 lil brothers, so no staircase and the window would go on the back of the property
i can stand up in the loft, no problm at all
i have the council see if they could point me in direction of suppliers and such but no joy there, they just dont seem very helpfull0 -
I would think because you are intending it to be a habitable room ('somewhere, where my boy can have his own space to play on his computer n can go do homework') then it will have to meet the fire regulations for stairs etc. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. We looked at doing same and discounted it for safety and cost reasonsHave a Bsc Hons open degree from the Open University 2015 :j:D:eek::T0

You are intending to use it as living space. The conversion you described is only fit for storage.
Apart from the obvious safety requirements outlined above, the existing floor won't take the weight.
Any type of conversion would require approval from your HA or LA.
A proper loft conversion will cost nearer £20K.No free lunch, and no free laptop0
