Hyundai i20 spare key

I have been doing a clearout and found a Hyundai I20 key fob which was a spare for a car we traded in and forgot to give both of the keys to the dealer. It was a 2009 and the spare is brand new.

Is this worth anything to anyone on freecycle etc as it still has the chip/electronics inside. Seems a shame to throw out.

Many thanks

The nice thing to do would be contact the dealer to whom you PXd the car and ask them if they would contact the buyer to find out if they would like the second key.

For the poor sod buying your car, only having one key because you forgot to give both in to the dealer might have been a right pain and ended up costing them a fair few quid to get a spare.

I just can't understand why so many of the cars on the used market have only one key. It's not hard to keep both of them and pass them on when you sell it. I won't buy a car with one key on principle these days, walked away from some nice motors as a result but I've always found a better one somewhere else.

There is always one smart a**e eh?

Did you not consider the first call I made was to the dealer to say I had found the key and would they like me to post it on. They were not interested in the slightest, the car had long been sold on and the dealer had received their slice from the sale so there was nothing in it for them.

It is ok saying it's not hard to pass on both sets of keys when you are selling the car but when you have a son going through chemotherapy and you cannot remember the last time you slept in your own bed, it suddenly becomes not too important turning the house upside down for a car key, especially as I pointed it out to the dealer and they said don't worry too much if you cannot find it.

Thank you Sinbad for your reply, however short and sweet, it answered my question, unlike the other poster who made me feel like the criminal of the century:rotfl:

The dealer won't worry about it. Deducted from your trade in as you only had one fob and charged the new buyer for one. He was on a win win.
  • Luckily we didn't lose out at all. We swapped the i20 we had owned just under a year (bought in the scrappage scheme) for a brand new model under the "Many Happy Returns" scheme which only cost £599. It seemed a no brainer as we were due to pay for the first service and RFL anyway.

Instead of rambling on for 10 minutes - consider that if you had already stated you'd contacted the dealer, none of that rant would be necessary. It's the kind of information that'd be useful in the first post.

Ditto, never touch a car with missing keys.

If a car is stolen, and you can't produce both sets of keys (or written confirmation that the "missing" key has been deleted from the security module, which should have happened when a dealer supplied a new key) expect a very hard time getting an insurance company to pay out.

Not the OPs problem now though ;)
I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Id imagine she only offered it up in response to the tiresome BeenThroughItAll who has obviously never forgotten or misplaced anything in his life.

That's a bit unnecessary. We're all entitled to our opinion; if the OP had said she'd tried the dealer first, I'd never have had to state mine.

You obviously won't believe me, but I have never lost anything of value. To me, it beggars belief that people can lose, forget or misplace items like mobile phones, car keys, house keys, cameras etc.

You've obviously never had to survive on what you can carry, when forgetting something could cost you dear, since you can't just nip to the shop and get a new one of whatever it was.

You didnt HAVE to state your opinion anyway - you could have left it at suggesting she tries the dealer, which was where your post's relevance to the OPs query ended.

    No, you're right, I don't believe you.

I'm not homeless/a refugee/lost in the wilderness and never have been, so no, I havent had to. But then again, I don't think you have either and are just trying to justify a typically self righteous MSE put down.

Thanks for that. That's the kind of response that really makes me proud to have put my life on the line so that you can have your opinion just as I can.
