My daughter is 13, she's been on FB since she was 12. She finds it all a bit tedious now. Especially the comments about who's fallen out with who and who said what.

I've always had access to her page, she doesn't mind, i don't comment on any of her posts, they're usually just harmless jokes etc.

The OP's son at 15 must feel like he's being treated as a small child. I feel a bit sorry for him.

15? Jeez... I felt like an adult at that age. Had been with my 17 year old boyfriend since 14 (split after 3 years) and was extremely mature.

I know we're all different, but if he is a very young 15 year old, maybe you should encourage him to have some responsibility, independence and show some trust.

He could be working in less than a year and even get married (albeit with your permission - unless the law's changed)!

Not saying all kids should be 'mini-adults' but at 15, banning FB sounds way too over the top to me.

My eldest is 13 and has just set up a facebook page, but it is on lock down the security settings are so high but me and her dad are on there as friends and the only friends she has on there are people she knows in rl and most of which we know too.
We have her passwords too which has proved useful as some of the pages liked by her friends i deemed unappropreate and have been in and deleted.
Tbf she doesnt use it that often and when she does she is in the same room as us so we can see what she is doing too.
There's this place in me where your fingerprints still rest, your kisses still linger, and your whispers softly echo. It's the place where a part of you will forever be a part of me.

My niece was allowed a Facebook account at about 13. I was so disturbed by the things she posted (jokes about BJs etc) that I discussed it with my sister, both the content and the fact that her profile was entirely public. Sister didn't see an issue with it and was 'liking' some of the jokes, and in the end I unfriended them both because it was too awful to observe :(

    how things have gone downhill.

Thanks for all your help. I am an oldie and not into Facebook and yes the media has portrayed it as negative.

I have never had children but agreed to let him live with me due to problems at home. So I guess I still think of my childhood and how I was raised.

No I am not controlling I just hope to do the right thing.

To be honest, teenagers are very good at agreeing to things being 'banned' and then doing it anyway!

It might be better to allow him to share any internet use with you, and not feel he has to hide it (as I bet he is!), as then, if there are any problems, he'd feel he could come to you.

The thing with teenagers, ghastly as they are, is to keep all lines of communication open and make them feel they can share things without a lot of grief.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

Fair enough if the parent chooses not to use it. But if the child wants to - at 15, are you really saying the parent should say no?! I can see how you'd want to stamp down authority on certain things, but FB? Really? I think that's forcing their opinion on someone else (like a vegetarian saying their child isn't allowed to eat meat when they want to!).

Like it or not, the world has changed since we were all out on our bikes/playing hotscotch with no mobile phones and would go home when the streetlights came on/when it started getting dark...

Things dont change for the better. Its extremely pressurising for parents today to provide every child with a smartphone possibly on contract,

todays kids are screwed up with everything they must have.

We are just talking about the social media website Facebook yes? Not an introduction to heroin or the easy guide to homicide?

Just checking. Some people take it very seriously. And before I have to hear about the dangers, I know. But we could all get run over by a bus tomorrow. Although a bit weird if we all did :rotfl:

I know a few girls who have daughters of about 8 who have facebook profiles!
Like someone mentioned before, it is weird some of the stuff they write and 'like'. Very adult/sexual stuff, not to mention constant 'selfies'.
It's a crazy time we live in!
