I have been looking at these: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/1090655.htm#pdpFullProductInformation
It says it can work by using your TV as a monitor- effectively allowing internet available material to be displayed direct on the screen. It seems cheaper than a laptop and would take up less space. It is more expensive than things like NOW or those ROKU boxes but shouldn't be limited in the way those are. I think it would also be quite portable.
Has any one used one of these or a similar device?

Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.

I can't see any real advantage with one of these, as you can link most (all?) laptops to an external monitor, but the laptop can be used independently elsewhere, too.
Another problem could be small size meaning rarity or higher cost of parts should you need repairs.0 -
I have an Acer Revo RL80, I got it from eBuyer for £139 I think it was with £20 cashback. It's about the same size as the one you linked to, except it is a 1.5Ghz dual core.
When I first got it, I installed Windows 8 and would stream NOWTV or Netflix on it but I wasn't overly keen on Windows 8 and for some personal reason didn't like having it hooked up to my TV. It was mounted behind the TV and you couldn't see it and you couldn't hear it either.
I've since bought a roku 3 and have turned my Acer Revo into a headless Plex Server running ubuntu 13 server edition.
The Acer Revo is a nice machine, very quiet and highly recommended
It's easy enough to upgrade RAM and the HDD if you so desire and has plenty of USB ports. I have the machine on 24/7 - it pulls a maximum 65 Watts! 0 -
That little beast should be able to play or stream anything you throw at it. The disadvantage compared to a dedicated STB is control - it's not as easy to use of you just want to point a remote at it - it's a PC after all. I have a Mac Mini under my TV, and what I do is use remote desktop software. This means you can sit on your sofa, and use the laptop to control the under TV PC. If you and family members can cope with that, it's the most versatile (and SMARTest) thing you can have under your TV.0
