Hello DireEmblem - fascinating personality stuff eh? How close to the mark is it for you?

Never heard of EasyRoomate so thank you very much for this resourse. The places I was looking at were just under $1000 per month but that was in a room of 4 people. I like people but I prefer my own space more. And leaving stuff in a room like that all day, having to be quiet for other people etc etc.. It's okay for a few weeks I am sure but not a few months.

So.. I am on your site noe inbetween writing for my next monthly challenge.

Also I had a chat with the local Surgery.. am booked in for my vaccinations that were cancelled this week on the 1st April. Hep A and both Hep B, Tetanus, Typhoid, Polio and Dyptheria are all booked in. 3 injections on the day with a second visit for the second Hep B ( which will protect me for life ).

The next arrangment at a specialised travel clinic will be Yellow Fever (£75), Japanese Encephalitis (£100), Rabies (£55) and Cholera (£45).

The best, non-side-affect malaria tablets (Malerone) are £3 per tablet. If I were to take these every day of my trip for 7 months it is going to cost me £633. Is this for real?? (Research alert!!!)

EDIT ; Tablets just located for 64p each online. Hmmmmmm ....£135 sounds better although I think this will need a lot more time spent on it. Don't want some dodgy online site to kill me although this is TravelPharm.com if anyone has heard of it.

Why don't you have a trial of the less expensive ones? A guy at my work did this and he was happy with the less expensive one.

Been watching property shows again... Depressing.

will you be in a malaria area for 7 months?! eek thats a lot! if you have a morrisons pharmacy near you its worth asking in there. last time i went i was advised they were cheapest. i think they sold them at cost price plus a £5 charge so was a massive saving.

have a look at which ones work in the areas you are going to and you could always try the cheaper ones if they offer suitable protection :)

  • Morrisons??? Are they going to be made from sherbert and washing powder..? I have never consdiered them . Although I don't have a pharmacy one near me there is a LOT of research to be done on this.

Yes 7 months in south east Asia. If I get to Japan I can stop using them but that's assuming I can still afford Japan at the end of everything... Burma and most of the places I am going bar the centre of Thailand is a "hot" zone for mozzies. It does seem to be a LONG time on them. My poor kidney!

I have read some people don't take them for the entire time they are there - I have a lot of reading to do I must admit.

Peaty - it's so expensive isn't it. I say get a tree and build a house in that!!!

Malarone is only taken when you are in a malarial area, and for (I think) one week after.
Your biggest asset is TIME! I'm focused on multi-generational financial freedom.
  • Your right Listerbelle... unfortunately bar the central areas of Thailand the rest of the places I am going are high malaria places especially Burma/Myanmar... I think I will have a chat with the "professionals" after I get the basics from the NSH injected into me...

I have realised that part of my "delaying gratification" is all down to my INTJ status. Whereas I find this personality stuff fascinating I do realise that we are not the personification of what is written down and will never pigeon hole myself however it stands firm in my travel prep..

I won't book a flight until the agonising wait of both passports is over. I won't visit any clinics / or look for items that I am taking with me until I finally get the NHS appointment sorted and other vaccinations complete... it's like I need to get the boring but most important parts paid for first then I can enjoy a new rucksack and items of clothing otherwise it won't be as enjoyable if I still have the boring and most important things to do. Make sense?

Hmmm maybe that's just common sense. But no.. I really want to book a flight but can't justify it until I have my Aussie passport in my mitts... Which should be soon though...

I am currently reading a very stupid book at the moment called The Gates of Byzantium - a second in trilogy about a group of survivors living in the seering heat of Texas while being stalked by creatures who hunt at night in packs, are impervious to man-made weapons, don't like sunlight or silver and are slowly taking over the planet (it's all my brain can fathom at 0500 in the morning on the way to work albeit my mother would be aghast at what I am letting in my head!!! :o) - however they have come across a safe haven, on a beach... and it makes me want to leave tomorrow. That's the long way around telling you I need some sun! Hahahaha!

Although I have just transferred £1000 into my travel account! Whoop!!!

  • hi NSK, great to see your plans really taking shape!

I'm sure you know already but there are lots of more specific maps/guidance re malaria areas and jabs. When I went to Brazil we thought we would need malaria tablets but because of all the side effects I didn't want to take them if I didn't need to. I found something that gave a lot more details on exact areas, and as we were in the big cities we decided against it. Still a slight risk but we were comfortable with it. I"m guessing you are going out of the way a bit more but still worth considering. Great that there are lots of different sources of tablets though :)

    so excited for you :j

LHG - Hello! Amoungst my research I have come across some folk like yourself that felt it okay to drop the use of the tablets altogether. I think personally when I am in and around Bangkok / Chang Mai etc I will be okay without it. It's Vietnam and Cambodia / Burma that worries me... and yes the long term damage to my liver (or is it kidneys) and side affects worry me.

I am tough minded, but my body is not. Mozzies will love me, the heat will kill me, my feet will probably given me grief, my skin will itch and sod's law says I will get some weird non-life-threatening-but-very-annoying disease just to waste my time and make me anxious.... I would like to rule malaria out of this equation but information from anyone and anywhere is much appreciated...

    • Yellow Fever vaccination = BOOKED! 18th March 2014. I am aware I might need two days off sick to recover... suits me! ..
    • Vaccination Information Chat = BOOKED! Tomorrow at the same clinic as the above.
    • NHS vaccinations (Tetanus / Hep A / Hep B x2 / Typhoid / Dyptheria / Polio ) = BOOKED! = 1st April 2014.
    Whoop!!!

I was thinking last night that since I have all of this now sorted I need to consider buying a flight. I will need two ( cheaper ) from Belfast ---> London then London----> Bangkok.

Then I remembered Visa's although these can be done a lot closer to the time......

    Right then............flights.....
