People in those groups have never been able to buy in the South East. The problem is the lack of social housing.

Yes but I don't think it would be possible to build enough rental properties in London to bring rents down to a level where low paid people could afford them without housing benefit.

    maybe maybe not

but there is no merit is subsidising houses rather than people in need.

Why not? Why does it make sense to keeping paying ever increasing HB instead?

If they built masses of social housing in the south east it would solve the housing crisis down here & a massive injection of social housing would reduce the prices of houses.

people who are poor can be subsidised as appropriate.

it makes sense to subsidise poor people and not people because they were once poor and were allocated a designated property (called social housing)

The chances are the people will, by and large, remain relatively poor.

There will be a few who do well. There is no reason why they should continue to be subsidised if they choose to remain. In the same way HB is reviewed and removed/reduced rent could be reviewed and charged at a market rate.

If they do well then many would aspire to private ownership surely. That private ownership would be more attainable.

there is no benefit in building subsidised state controlled property when we need to subsidise poor people

we need to build more housing (in areas of need) so everyone can benefit from better housing standards

So the government building "state controlled" (your words) property would not be more housing? Wouldn't poor people being housed be "subsidiising" them?

There is no reason why "state controlled" housing couldn't be built to equally high standards or even better standards.
