To be honest, most people would play these on their phones. Are you planning to get a new phone, or an upgrade, and are your sure your existing phone does not support mp3, as it has been quite common now for many years to be played on phones?

I do have a Samsung Galaxy Ace GT S5830 mobile but I would not be sure how to download and operate it, my excuse is my age (late 70s) any help would be appreciated.

Do you use it at all at the moment? If so, do you know how to see how much storage it has?
You might need to buy a bigger memory card (SD card) if you want to put the CDs on the phone, but don't worry, they are cheap, you shouldn't need to spend more than £5.

It's possible that 2GB (which is the size of the SD card the phone comes with according to a review I read) is enough storage anyway, I have no idea how much space 12 CDs worth of audio takes once it's been compressed.

Page 56 of the manual says - copy mp3s to a memory card, and insert memory card into phone.

Twelve 1 hour audio CDs ripped with Windows Media Player takes around 840MB of memory, so a 2GB memory card will be more than adequate.

Her is how to copy files, from the manual, this is way no 2 and I think it is the best and most people do it this way.

The first way in the manual and is not listed here is using a free bit of software called "Samsung Kies". This this software is very hit an miss, often does not work and gives obscure messages. To top it off it can be a right pig to fix or get working.

Connected as a mass storage device
You can access the file directory of the memory card by
using the device as a memory card reader.
    1
Insert a memory card into the phone.

    2
Using a USB cable, connect the multifunction jack on
    your device to a PC.

    3
Open the notifications panel and select
USB connected → Connect storage to PC → OK

    4
Open the folder to view files.

    5
Copy files from the PC to the memory card.

    6
    When you are finished, select
    Disconnect storage from PC.

bluesnake... Many thanks' for your very clear and detailed description of how to copy the audio files to my Samsung Galaxy Ace this will be my weekend job when I have peace and quiet to concentrate, and yes my daughter does help me when she pops home but she goes that fast with her fingers that many times it becomes a blur to me.

My good Lady Wife bought me a Sony Walkman NWZ-E383/E384 as a late Christmas present which came as a lovely surprise, so now I will always be in possession of my Learn Italian Course.

I did notice that the Audio files on the CD were in a .cda format so it would appear that I will have to change the format of these files on my PC then 'drag and drop' them to the Sony Walkman, that will be fun.

Many thanks' to you all for your time and patience in helping me so much, it is greatly appreciated.

    kind regards.
  • If the files on your CD are .cda files, they won't produce anything useful if you just copy them to another device. This is because they're not actually audio files, they're just pointers to audio files.

You will have to do another step to convert them to mp3 files.

This is a good clear article explaining this more simply.http://www.techsupportalert.com/how_to_work_with_audio_cd_cda_files.htm.

The exact steps for ripping (ie converting) the cda files to mp3 will depend on the software you choose to do the job. The article above has a link to some free software you might want to look at. But generally it's a fairly simple process and looks something like

    - open the programme
    - it will have a variety of possible inputs, select 'cd'
    - tell it where to find your cd
    - select the type of output, mp3
    - tell it where to put the output (if you have your phone connected at this point you could choose to put the output directly on to your phone: otherwise you could do all this on your pc and then move the output files from the pc to the phone)
    - press go and wait
    - it will tell you when it's done.

Good luck, it's easier than you think!
  • I bought the same Italian course from Amazon Black Friday. It specifically says in the info that you can copy them. I used Windows Media Player (the Rip page) and saved them to my computer as MP3s and then put them on another CD so I could keep a few in the car.

Many thanks' for your advice, putting them on CD to use in the car is a very good idea indeed for listening to when parked waiting for the better half returning from shopping.:)
