I bought a wireless broadband router with my Dell PC, but unfortunately my modem has a USB connector and router needs ethernet.
Having a huge row at the moment with Dell who say I cant return the router for a refund due to their terms and conditions, even though there's no information whatsoever on their website to enable me to see that incompatible with my modem - anyway, that's another story!
I wondered if you can buy some sort of adaptor that I can plug the USB into and that has an ethernet cable at the other end.
Does this exist or am I wishful thinking?
Thanks

the ethernet card wont solve the problem....
bridiej : Am I right in thinking that you want to connect a modem with a usb connector to a wireless router which only has an ethernet connector.....
if so, i think you will be stuck, when i was looking at getting my wireless router i had the same problem, so decided to get a router/modem to get around the usb/ethernet connector.
i am certain that there is a connector around, try having a look at pcworld (not online, cos i cant find anything there).smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... :cool:0 -
Yes Rob, that's it!!
Annoyed over this as Dell website has no info whatsoever and now trying to get them to see sense and take it back, although not sure that will happen....0 -
if it is a wireless broadband router..... doesnt it have a built in modem.....?
if so then the phone should connect straight in to the router......
whats the router's make and model number?
and make and supplier of your broadband?smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... :cool:0 -
Hi Rob
The modem is a Speedtouch ADSL modem, router (does not include modem just checked!) is Dell 2350 Broadband router. You need to connect the modem to the router via ethernet cable, the wirelessly network pc and laptop but modem has USB connector.
Have looked on internet and all I can find are adaptors that have a USB connector on the end, but I need one I can plug USB cable into and it has a ethernet the other end - does that make sense?
Cheers Rob0 -

i think there are few options (unfortunately due to internet restrictions at work.... boo hoo , i cant see some web sites)
either a direct usb to ethernet cable..... which due to different cabling technologies, i am almost certain that they are not available..... pooh!
the other option is a usb to ethernet adaptor then a cat 5 cable from adaptor to router..... i have seen some adapters, but they seem to want a usb in slot type a (as usual), rather than a slot type b
another option is convince dell to exchange router for different model ie an dsl model......
lastly...... sell the router on ebay..... buy a cheaper all singing all dancing model.... ie one with the modem built in.......
sorry its not good news.................. ignore see reply belowsmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... :cool:0 -
ignore last reply....
just found something that might do the trick.......
1) This is a gender changer adaptor that changes the socket from a to b or female to male etc, so plug this into the modem (not sure which one you need, but it will need to be able to take the standard usb connector from the second adapter below)
http://www.homestead.co.uk/productcategorydetail.aspx?CategoryID=51237&onspecialoffer=False
2) then connect the adapter below into the adapter above
http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=2018&pcount=&Product_Id=104991&Section.Section_Path=%2FRoot%2FNetworki...ndCables%2FNetworkI...aceCards%2F
then you plug the Ethernet cable from the router into the above adapter
you would have to search for best prices
sorry description sounds a little vague, but would do the tricksmile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... :cool:0 -
Thanks Rob, looks like the best option if Dell still refuse to take it back!!
Thanks!!0
