I'm afraid I don't know how the payment meters work but it sounds rather unfair that they charge more to people who are struggling to pay for their utilities, does anyone have any tips for the OP to reduce her bills?

Is the fuel £60 per week or £60 per month? I am confused by your reply.

Could your partner do anything to bring in a little bit of money if you have broadband? Such as online surveys, swagbucks etc. I know its only a little bit but if he is at home everyday then I expect he could make around £40 a month, maybe more. It would at least allow you to get contents insurance.

Any chance you could raise enough cash to get a runabout, and return the car to the HP company?

For the small mileage you are doing, £154pm seems a lot to be paying, just to own the car.
  • I only have £40 left to do me 3 weeks until i get paid and have nothing i can sell. How the hell do people manage :(

You would be amazed what people can (and do) manage on.

What do you have in the cupboards, fridge and freezer?

Use this up, before buying anything more.

Has your partner tried for a job in Security?

I know it's long hours, and unsociable shift patterns, but it's a job, and in a sector that is always looking for staff.

The pay may not be the greatest, but the long hours mean a decent (if hard won) take home pay.
  • I can't change my gas and elec suppliers due to owing them money. They were closed when i tried to phone them so will try again to get an update on what i owe.

I live in scotland so water is in my council tax, also as i work with the council i get the council tax deducted straight from my wages, this means that it comes out over 11 payments meaning I still get the 2 non payment months. This works best for me as means it is always paid. The last instalment is due off next months pay, and then it should reduce as it will be calculated with 2 adults over a full year.

I am in contract with my mobile phone until 2015 so can't change to PAYGO at the moment.

I have signed up for a few of the survey sights and my partner will do them when I am out at work. Unfortunately due to being an idiot a few years ago now he can't work in security, and is very restricted in what he can apply for this is where some of our problems are also.

Getting a run around would definitely help us it will just be the getting the money together that will cause the problems, not sure how to get round this one. I just feel that although we don't appear to use a lot of petrol we do use the car a lot and with the new baby coming and it being my first, I don't want to give it up if I can find an alternative. It's ok saying use public transport but where my mum lives it is rural so trains aren't regular etc. I moved to where I am to be closer to work but by doing this it means that my closest family member is 16 miles away so to get any support would prove more difficult.

Might it be cheaper to get a taxi a couple of times a month to get to your mother's and then get rid of the car?
  • My mum stays nearly 30 miles away so no i don't think this would work.
