  • What do you mean ridiculous?? Are you blind?

No, I can simply see where words are intended to be read in a sentence or not. Are you suggesting the OP is stupid?

So you are too naive to realise why they have positioned the words 'HMPO WEBSITE' right next to the words 'Apply Now'

All on the top line, encouraging a quick click before being told all that inconvenient stuff like its NOT the HMPO website.

    Really, really naive.
  • I notice how Powerful_rogue keeps defending this website on the spurious point that it is 'within the law'.

I did recently put a question to him but he appears to have dodged it . So, again, just for Powerful_rogue, here's another perfectly legal scenario with which I presume he's happy?

A member of the house of lords gets his attendance fee of about £380 a day by attending. Now some of them simply walk in, this then activates their attendance allowance for the day, then simply walk out of the building.

Of course, this is not what the attendance allowance is for, and this is clearly abuse of the rulse, but perfectly legal, within the rules, no law being broken, so, P_R, I'm sure you're happy to defend this with the same gusto? Over to you!

As I said before, that example has no relevance to what we are discussing, so im not going to answer. I have a choice whether to part with my money for this service. I have the choice to read the text and realise its not an official site, but a check and send service. If any of my local MP's are doing this, then they wont receive my vote in the next election.

You dont have to give these sites your money. Just like I dont have to shop at Tesco if I dont like them.

Whitegoods_engineer, I am sure you won't mind me addressing this point. ;)

Clearly you and I can both agree that in the MP's attendance allowance scenario there is something wrong.
The rules are not being broken, so it is the rules that need changing so that the silly situation no longer exists.

With the passport rogue websites, and DVLA, ESTS, EHIC, etc websites, we can surely also agree that these sites are not behaving illegally, so something needs to change so that they cannot behave as they do.

In both cases it is the rules that need to change.

Until the rules, the law, changes, people need to take responsibility to ensure they do not fall foul of these rogues.

Meanwhile, you and others, should be lobbying your MP, presenting new evidence to the OFT, writing to the Consumers Association, etc, etc.

Until the rules change, the best that anyone can do on this Consumer Rights board is to make victims aware of their rights as they exist at this point in time.

    ^^^^^^
THIS - absolutely bang on. :T

Maybe if all the people who have used these unofficial websites did this, things might change.

Iv'e written off the money and moved on.

But as long as this attitude exists, things will just continue and more & more of these types of websites will spring up to trap the unwary to part with unnecessary money.

Of course, it's entirely the OP's choice to move on, but if it had happened to me, I'd be doing all the things mentioned in wealdroam's post.
