Visited an orange/ee shop today and asked about an easy to operate smart phone that would a) be able to allow me to pair with my galaxy tablet to use my data allowance. and b) have a camera function that would allow photo's to be taken rapidly.

I was told such a phone should be a samsung and to expect to pay about £150. It could be cheaper if I were to wait for the right model to ne reduced.

If anyone has a phone that allows them to use their data via their tablet and the phone has a rapid fire camera, what make is it please.

You'll find they are not telling the whole story. They are describing the ability to link devices, BUT you are wanting to 'tether' and many tariffs do not permit this, you would have to switch tariffs (and pay extra each month).

It is only possible to use data on the mobile that has it unless explicitly allowed.

And even for 'linking'/'pairing' I don't see why it has to be Samsung and for £150. Like many salesmen they seemed to be talking rubbish.
  • First advice - don't buy from a carrier shop, use Phones 4 U, Carphone Warehouse or similar as you will get a phone without network "customisation" and likely to be unlocked.

Second advice - Get an Android phone as you have an Android tablet. The cheaper Sony phones are nice for the cost.

Third advice - whatever the original network you get the phone on, if they don't support tethering on PAYG try a "3" SIM or get a giffgaff SIM. In practice it seems to work with "3" and it is explicitly allowed on giffgaff (unless you buy a package "unlimited" data).

Clearly someone who hasn't been to P4U and experienced their returns policy.

Use them for trying them first hand - then buy online to protect your full DSR rights.
  • Advice - don't buy through P4U or CW unless you want shocking service.

If you want an easy to use phone that can tether look at one of Nokia Lumia range (Lumia 625, 620, 520) or Motorola Moto G - which offers great value for money.
  • I've used both Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4 U for a PAYG phone purchase in the last 12 months.

In both cases I was very satisfied with the service and the price paid.

Having said that I knew what I wanted to buy so there wasn't that much service needed.

Fortunately I haven't had to return either phone and both phone users are pleased with their devices.

I like the Nokia Lumia phones (I have a 920 myself) but for an Android user I think sticking with that ecosystem might be the better advice. Tethering on PAYG seems a bit hit and miss on my 920. It will allow the WiFi hotspot with a "3" PAYG SIM but wouldn't play on a Vodafone PAYG SIM when I tried.

For me, unlocked and unbranded phones are the great prize for PAYG as you can move between carriers easily and so buying from the likes of Carphone Warehouse and Phones 4 U.

Carphone Warehouse is the only place I buy my PAYG phones from.
I always do my homework before I go to the store.
    · Also if you buy upgraded one you get £10 off and no top-up required
