Android on tablet

Just got Android tablet for Xmas - its running 4.2.2 - is it possible to upgrade Android version and how would I do it? I have been into About and there is no update button?

Its running Kernel 3.0.36 - is it possible and worthwhile to update this as well and how would I do it?

Any other tips for an Android tablet would be gratefully received as it is my first tablet/Android device

Thanks

Android 4.4.2 is the latest version. When an update for your device becomes available it'll be shown in the slide down thing in the top right hand corner

When (or even IF) an update becomes available depends on which tablet it is.

Of course there's always the option to root it and install the stock Android firmware, or even a custom ROM.

Wiki said there was a KitKat version???

It only had an update for ROM - what's that?

"KitKat" is the name for Android OS Version 4.4.#

What is the make and model of the tablet! some tablet makers might limit what version their tablet can run because it might not be powerful enough or have enough room to run the latest Android OS.

You can "root" the tablet and that will let you replace the "rom" manually (ROM is another name for the Operating System) for another version of Android.

Just use it! 4.2 is fine. Is there something it won't do for you?

Kitkat is the name of the new Android OS that hasn't been released yet. Even when it is, there will be a delay of a few months before it is released for your tablet as the manufacturers modify it for their specific brands, adding apps etc.

So for the moment, you've go the most up to date version.

stphnstevey - you still haven't told us the make and model of your tablet. You're running 4.2 - Android JellyBean. 4.3 is also JellyBean, and 4.4 is KitKat. It came out in November Stooby2 and I've got it running on a Nexus 10 and 4 and an HP Touchpad!
Depending on the make and model, you're unlikey to very unlikely to get more than, say, one official update.
You're very likely to get unofficial updates though for popular devices. Cyanogenmod would be the biggest. Requires a bit of work and technical know-how first time, but easier after that.
