Buying a 3D TV in the sales?

OK, so there's a possibility that I will upgrade from a Panasonic 42" plasma TV to a 47" (approx) 3D TV if the price is right in the sales.
One question though. I've heard some 3D TVs have a 2D to 3D 'conversion' feature by which any programme can be watched in 'simulated 3D'. Is that correct and, if so, is it reasonably effective?
Then, of course, there's the question of which makes/models have it?
Is there anyone with any words of wisdom for me?

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

It's like the 'electronically processed stereo' of the 60's - good in parts, but ultimately a gimmick. You will not use 3D permanently - it's too much of a hassle.0

Thanks both.
I'll take that as a "Don't waste money on a 3D set, spend more on a 2D 'smart' TV" then.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Whether you'll get much use out of the feature is a matter of personal taste.
It was only the simulated 3D I was directing my disdain toward.0 -

This is exactly what I did a couple of months back. To be honest I think the 3D is a bit of a "gimmick". Watched it a couple of times, but rarely bother now. I wear glasses so I have to have the 3D specs on top of those; and the passive 3D "dims" the picture somewhat. Having said all that, the 3D effect can be very spectacular at times.
I didn't buy it for that (luckily !), I just wanted a modern, quality, smart TV - my new Panasonic is superb !!! :T:T You will not be disappointed................0 -
Don't buy a TV based on 3D OR 'smartness'. Buy it based on the picture quality. Everything else can be added. Keeping the smartness in set top boxes means there's less to be replaced. You're likely to have your smart features left behind when your manufacturer decides to stop updating your 'old' (2 yrs!) TV because it wants to sell you a new one!
The simulated 3D thing - it'll be hard to find, different manufacturers will have different names for it, but if it does work, it'll just look a bit like a pop-up book with stuff in the foreground sticking out a bit.0
