How are you reading your emails? Is it through a web browser or a mail client?
    1. Have you tried to Google the answer?
    2. If you were in the other person's shoes, how would you react?
    3. Do you want a quick answer or better understanding?

The alias feature allows you to have more than one alias address for a Microsoft account, so that you sign in using the primary alias, and can then use the other alias addresses.

Sign into your Microsoft account, select 'Account settings' and use 'Add or change account aliases' to maintain up to 6 alias addresses, each with a separate inbox folder.

Did they not remove this option at some point last year as they felt it was insecure?

The alias feature is what Microsoft wants people to use, and replaces the old option of linking multiple independent accounts, which was deemed insecure because of the multiple logins each with its own password.
