Faulty electricity meter

Hello members

I recently moved into a new property where we have an economy7 meter installed. The meter looks like an ancient model with a circling dial. I noticed that the NORMAL reading is still the same to what estate agent noted couple of weeks ago. While the LOW reading has changed since then. I have a feeling that meter is faulty.

My question is what we should do. Should we sit quietly and let the supplier figure it out themselves? OR do we have to be pro-active and inform the supplier of the fault.

Many thanks for help

Tell them and keep taking regular readings so that you've got a record of what is going on.
If the meter isn't reading correctly they will estimate what they think you should have used which might be far higher than what it should be - you don't really want a guesstimate that might be too high.

    Thanks for your reply

I have Economy 7 meter. The LOW reading is working but the NORMAL one is stuck. Do you think there is any benefit of keep on noting LOW reading?

Assuming you are responsible for the bills (i.e. it's not a rental contract with utilities included), you should know who the supplier is, and may well be on a deemed contract with them. Contact the supplier and find out the contract details. You could be on a standard tariff without Economy 7, despite having an E7 meter. If all usage is recorded as LOW, then what that register records will be your total usage and should be used for billing. Or it could be a meter fault which needs rectifying.
Bit of investigative work required, but best to nip it in the bud now, rather than find out you've been massively underpaying in a year or so.

victor thats rubish, when you have single rate billing on a e7 meter both reads are taken. This is a faulty meter , op they will estimate remember it will catchup
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

So the consensus is that I call them and say that my meter is not working?

Do I need to speak to the managing agent as well. I assume the utility company would want to replace the ancient meter as I dont think they get fixed.

    Thanks

Only time Managing Agent might need to be informed is if the exchange would require building fabric to be changed (ripping out kitchen units/stud walls)

I did bit more investigation and it looks like that only LOW reading is running all day. Is this a fault?
