Landline but no number or dialtone

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been covered many times, I've only just discovered this forum!

So, we have just bought a new house, and although the contracts say that there is a BT landline in place, and I have seen a telephone line in the property, when I have tried to connect to it with a phone there is no dial tone. The seller does not know the phone number (it was tenanted until a few months ago).

When I have tried to order broadband from BT, the first question is 'is there a landline in place?' and if there is, you need to input the number. So, is there a way around this, or should I just click 'no', that there is no line? This can't be the first time this has happened, right?

Thanks all, much appreciated.

The line will have been disconnected at the exchange.
Get in touch with BT or your preferred phone supplier and order a new phone line.

It happens most of the time. Sometimes there will be a dial tone but I don't ever recall being able to make calls without getting the phone reconnected.
  • Ok thanks, so putting in a new line doesn't necessarily mean a physical phone line?

    Thanks both.

A new "line" to most would mean connecting the house with a new "physical" phone line.

What it sounds you need is a new "connection". These can often be done without visiting the premises (as long the premises have the physical phone line installed.

Since the cost of a reconnection or a new line provision is the same, it makes little difference as far as the customer is concerned (if they're unwise/daft enough to pay the BT rack rate of £130).
Other providers will discount this to £40-50, or some to nothing, depending on the package taken.
