Just to say I got a first, then a masters; still found it very hard to find a job. Its not just about your degree classification, you also need experience and 'soft' skills. :)

Spot on. I attended several initial assessment centres with those predicted firsts, and many didn't make it past that first round.

Hope you got something sorted NekoZombie! x

  • I got a 2:2, then a masters, then I got a perfect job combining the two, with no prior job experience

I think a lot of it is just plain dumb luck

There's a lot of criticism of those who've got firsts here ... surely making comments/having preconceptions about those who've got firsts is as bad as making assumptions about someone with a third?

I don't mean to cause arguments here, but this is really annoying me. As ringo_24601 says, getting a job tends to be down to luck - a degree can open the door for you, but it's the skills you've got that get you through it, not necessarily your degree classification. It's absurd to hold the notion that people with firsts are somehow 'failures' in other ways, just as someone with a third wouldn't really be happy if we all made assumptions about them.

i agree - i have said in a few threads on here that getting a first can sometimes hinder you, as people assume you're dull (speaking from experience - who'd have thought that a first could hold you back!). i think blind luck will play a part in getting your first job but you can do things to help it along!

  • I did say 'I think a lot of it is just plain dumb luck'... well, the bit i believe that's associated with is finding the job that is right for you. I was lucky in finding the right job advert on the right page of the new scientist. Then i was lucky in the right employer liking my CV over someone elses.

I don't think I was lucky in getting the job - i beat 7 other applicants after being assessed for my presentation skills, my analytical and programming skills and facing a 7 person panel of expert academics. I was one of two people who successfully finished the programming task and the favorite because they liked the method i used to do the task.

Like my mum told me once, the harder you work, the more luck comes your way.

I've never quite understood 1st bashing myself - there's no reason to suppose that the people that beat you in all your exams are any worse at 'soft' skills or common sense, they can also be better than you at that. The people i know got 1sts are very bright and hard working

    I'll second the above -

first bashing is incredibly unfair and based on sweeping generalisations.

by the way dmg24, I have a job and it pays ok (24k) but in London I could always do with more :D
