I don't agree about the OS not affecting power use. The OS manages plenty of non app processes that will draw down the battery i.e. parallax graphic transitions or allowing apps to refresh in background.
It doesn't, if you turn those things off. See benje302's link, and also turn on "increased contrast" and "reduce motion" in Settings > General > Accessibility to reduce the amount of silly battery draining graphics nonsense to a minimum.

After doing all that, the battery life on my iPhone 4 with iOS 7 was the same as it was with iOS 6 (I had everything turned off (eg location services) when I was using iOS 6 too).

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Go to Settings -> General -> Background App Refresh and switch it OFF.

    See how it goes then.

I have an iPhone 4s purchased 12 may 2012 with the Three "The One Plan" contract. Which is basically more minutes and texts than I'll ever use and as much as you can eat data plus tethering so I can use the internet on my laptop.

Since upgrading to IOS 7 I have had problems with the Wifi, the screen freezing, battery life. At one point the only thing I could do to reset the phone was to let the battery go flat. The Wifi switch is mainly greyed out all the time. When it isn't greyed out it either won't connect to to any Wifi (even though it will list them) or it connects but the internet is not available and then the connection fails after a minute or so. The battery life is terrible, if I don't use the fully charged up phone it will last about 12 hours, as soon as I start using it the battery dies really quickly.

The iPhone forum (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5356193?start=0&tstart=0) has loads of users complaining about similar problems. Is anyone here having problems?

I took the phone to a three store they said "its IOS 7, it was built for a more powerful/quicker processor and the WiFi can't keep up." They said they couldn't do anything about it as it was my choice to upgrade to IOS 7! Yet in their support page they say ensure that your phone has the lastest operating system updates. Three also said that I should take it to Apple, which I did. Apple said it was nothing to do with the software update, and then did a diagnostic which claimed the battery needed servicing and there is a hardware issue with the WiFi. Which they could not fix but would replace the phone for £150.

I'm being passed from pillar to post. The manufacturers 12 month warranty is passed. If I have a contract for 24 months and I am 18 month'ish through it, do I still have a reasonable claim to expect Three to provide another phone? Apple would replace the battery for around £50, which though expensive, I would be prepared to pay for as batteries don't last. However, I would expect the iphone hardware to last significantly more than 18 months, nay ignificantly more than the 24 month contract that I have with Three. Can any one advise me where I stand legally, Clearly as a smart phone it is currently defective and not fit for purpose, but what is a reasonable length of time to expect it to work given there are no moving parts other than the on/off, menu and volume buttons which are not affected?
