Does he ask for his ticket money back and compensation for having his day ruined?

No but if there was some reason he couldn't enter the match, maybe a printing error on the ticket or some scenario, I can imagine he'd be demanding his train fare back and everything else. Because to him his day would have been ruined, and IMO only he - or anyone who has had problems with food on Christmas Day - can judge how upset they are when things go wrong. That might not entitle them legally to compensation but I imagine many retailers will often want to offer some form of goodwill gesture where they've got it wrong.

I think demanding anything would not get him very far.

But in this instance the retailer - and we don't know who the retailer was - didn't offer any goodwill gesture at all.
I actually find that quite surprising in the circumstances but that doesn't mean the OP was entitled to a goodwill gesture.

I think the following shows how bad it can get for some people on Xmas day, no food, wrong presents, disappointed people, relationship break ups
