Hi all,

I am looking for some tyres - 205 50 ZR 17 89W

I'm familar with the tyres on www.blackcircles.com and www.mytyres.co.uk.

My current car has Mitchelin Premium tyres which are about £160 per corner fitted.

Does anyone have any recommendations on any of the other brands and/or where to go to get the best deals?

Thanx

Always hard to get decent tyre recommendations - very few people get to try enough different brands to get a good comparison. Most of us end up comparing worn out old set with shiny new set.

Best I can say is I always liked Falken GRBeta when I ran a fast car. Didn't last as long as Michelin (but about as long as anything else I tried), but much cheaper and excellent in any weather except snow. I had a lot of sets over 100K, as my old Alfa 155 was heavy on tyres (maybe 8K out of a front set!)

Edit : If you live in the south, maybe call Micheldever Tyres. Always had good prices and great service.

From what you're saying, Michelin is pretty much the best brand? Are there any brands out there that are good in all weather conditions even if they don't last as long as Mitchelins?

    Thanx

I didn't mean to imply they were better, though some types of Michelin do last longer than many other brands. Certain tyre types will suit certain cars and uses, so it's not a straightforward 'A is better than B' choice. Different weight, driving style, suspension setup etc. will all influence how a tyre performs. The performance of a tyre is not a simple question either... what do you want to judge it on? braking distance/cornering grip/wet/dry/ride quality/noise/fuel economy - all are influenced by tyre choice.

One manufacturer usually makes a range of tyres with different aims, so just stating a make doesn't tell the whole story. When you're phoning for quotes, make sure you're comparing apples with apples.

You've specified a fairly 'high end' tyre size... is there a web forum for owners and enthusiasts of your model of car? You might be able to get other owners experiences and opinions from there.

for michelins go to costco, it is worth the membership cost just for the savings on tyres
other good brands that i use are kleber and cooper (both budget versions of premium brands. cooper are the control tyres used in the A1 gp series )

Do you know when Costco will be doing their regular 20% discount offer for 4 tyres please? I think it might be Nov. 2007.

dont know for sure , they dont always send out the offers these days,
i normally buy my tyres then and get them fitted after the offer has finished
it saves on the 5 hour wait :D

  • yes I agree, you should expect delays, when Costco have one of their Michelin promotions on, they must be swamped with orders. When I last bought 4 Michelin tyres from them earlier this year, it took them 2 months to get the tyres in stock. Very worrying when your tyres are already near the legal limit. Unfortunately, it came to me threatening them with legal action, should an accident occur, after chasing them for months, & their Regional Mgr rang me back the next day to say the tyres had just come in. He apologised profusely and blamed Michelin for not supplying tyres quickly enough. Perhaps Costco don't give Michelin much/any notice period of when their promotions will be? More likely, perhaps Costco simply don't hold any stock & order on a just in time basis, which is ok in normal trading conditions, but when a promotion is running, overloads Michelin?

Good wet / all weather tyres look to Uniroyal and Vredestein.

I know that Uniroyal advertise themselves as 'the rain tyre' but the one set I had were not much cop in the wet. Cornering/stopping in general ok, but they couldn't deal with standing water at all well.

Thank god they didn't last long :rotfl:

    Just my 2p'th
