Ebay seller wants bank transfer

The reason people get scammed is because they cannot give up on an item they believe is a bargain, if this was any other item you would use common sense and walk away.
Firstly you need to get your unclaimed payment back, until that is safely back with you it has the potential to be claimed merely by someone setting up the email as a paypal address. So worse case scenario here is that you lose 2 lots of £80.If you can't get it back then you need to wait 30 days for it to be returned automatically.
meanwhile phone ebay and report seller for using a 'fake' or misleading paypal id to avoid accepting it. After you safely have your money back leave negative feedback to warn other buyers. This might sound 'just' like someone trying to avoid 3% paypal fees, but I am far too cynical and wonder if you are being duped- and by going along with the seller other buyers might also fall into this trap.
Also why on earth are you asking seller about buyer protection, don't you believe us on here, and if not why ask?I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. Hi
I have the payment back, claimed it last night.
I only mentioned buyer protection to the seller to flag up that I knew what I was talking about - thanks to the kind people on here - and to get his reply to that on record through ebay messages.
Please don't be offended as that is not what was intended.
He has offered me the chance to pick it up from his studio and pay cash. Offer made this morning. This is easily done and the route I may take.
Thanks to all who responded, I appreciate it.

Asking about something suggests you don't know the answer, mentioning you won't have buyer protection that way suggests you do know about it.
Anyhow it's good you managed to claim the money back and if you get the item you want at the price you want then that's good too.
Can't help but think this topic's going to come up again at some point though with someone who doesn't live so close as there's obviously some reason he doesn't want to accept Paypal.0 -

I asked the seller 'where is my buyer protection if I pay by bank transfer?' So he knows I know about it and the question made that quite clear. His reply was to show his very good feedback record and offer the pick up option.0 -

Yeah, exactly. Someone who doesn't have a clue could ask the same thing in an attempt to check they're still protected. It shows you know there is buyer protection on ebay, it doesn't show you know what ways are safe. How many people would believe him if he'd said 'don't worry you can get your money back still if you're not happy'? Perhaps adding that ebay will pay them back or despite how they paid Paypal will refund them.
I get why you did it and you knew better. With cash on collection you can check the item before handing any cash over. The thing is others might not know better, might not live close and if he is avoiding Paypal for dodgy reasons the next person might not be so lucky. Just makes me wonder why he is happy with any payment except paypal, that's all.0 -
Most sellers are genuine. I've no idea how much the item sold for, and it's likely they were just trying to save on the PP fees. However, you shouldn't waive your buyer protection to save them a few quid.0

Why would a money saving forum want to punish people who want to use a free and safe way to receive money???"Love you Dave Brooker! x"

The seller is breaking ebay rules, using fake details (email address) and could easily scam someone trusting enough to use bank transfer instead of Paypal.
It's not about punishing for wanting to use a free and safe way to receive money, it's warning others that he could be a scammer based on the above. There's no reason for him not to accept Paypal.0
