Labour with 2nd or 3rd child....or more
Comments
-
1st took over a day, ended up epidural & syntocin (?Spelling) drip.
2nd, my body knew what it was doing, about 12 hours in labour, plenty of moving around but managed on TENS & gas & air.
3rd, needed ARM, as well overdue but then baby in 4 hours. (TENS, gas & air & "being gymnastic" again)
So I'd say presuming baby 1 has shown up eventually, 2 & subsequent come easier.
Those who have explosive deliveries have my awed & horrified sympathy!0 -
I was in labour for 1 3/4 hours with my first who was a day late and 50 mins with my 2nd who was 5 days late....much easier labour with 2nd and he was back to back which is supposed to be slower and more painful...I dread to think how quick he would have been if he had been in the right position!0

My first labour was 15 hours from first contraction to holding baby. The second was about 5 hours. They started the same (no warning, straight in to contractions 5 mins apart) but other than that they were different.
First baby - back to back, painful labour. Waters broke at home. Took a long time to push him out (because he was back to back). No tearing.
Second baby - much less painful. Got to hospital and she was born within 20 mins. Waters broke all over the midwives2nd degree tearing.
All labours are different....well, except for starting at inconvenient moments and spoiling best laid plans! If having different experiences, thoughts and ideas to you, or having an opinion that you don't understand, makes me a troll, then I am proud to be a 100% crying, talking, sleeping, walking, living Troll. :hello:0 -
My first was born at 37 weeks, 6lb 15oz, waters broke at home and he was born 12 hours later.
My second was born at 38 weeks, 8lbs, waters broke at home and he was born 6 hours later.
With my first I felt ill and lethargic 2 days before giving birth, then the day before I had loads of energy and was actually clearing out my wardrobe when my waters broke.
With the second, exactly the same, ill and lethargic 2 days before, then loads of energy the day before.
Even though he was 2 weeks early I knew it was the same pattern as my first labour, so much so that during the night I woke up and thought my waters are going to break, rushed to the bathroom and caught them in a jug!
Put some of it in a sample bottle and took it with me to the hospital as I knew they'd ask if they were clear!
Midwife told me that in all her years I was the only mother that had ever brought her waters in! :rotfl:Ageing is a privilege not everyone gets.

Samtoby thanks for asking this question the replies are very interesting! I've been wondering the same thing as with DS I was in labour for 47 hours from first contraction to holding baby! I'm hoping this time round will be a little shorter!

Child 1, 2 weeks early, 3 day labour!
Child 2, 10 days late, 1.5 hour labour.
Both were back to back but positioning managed to turn number 2. 1/2 oz weight difference!0 -
One of my midwives (can't remember with which baby) had a theory that the shorter the menstrual circle, the shorter the pregnancy - my cycle was 25 days.
Nope that doesnt match with me. I had 35 day cycles.
First child was 10 days early
Second child was 16 days early
Third child was 3 days early
4th child spot on time
5th child 8 days late
6th child 7 days early

My first I went into labour at 38 weeks + 4
My second I was 41 weeks + 1
Third 40 weeks +4
Fourth 39 weeks +3
Labours were (from first contraction to birth) - 38hours, 10hours, 12 hours and 2 hours in order0 -
Dd was born at 36 weeks, 5 hours from start to finish x she weighed 6lb 11oz and I tore and needed stitches :-(
DS was born in 3 hours, water birth no stitches or anything and he was 8lb 7oz born 3 days before his due date. This labour was miles easier than the first even though he was quite a bit bigger x0 -
All three of my labours started at about 7.30am.
First child, labour started on Thursday and I was 3cm dilated by mid morning. Very slow labour! Waters broke Sunday evening, I went to hospital and stayed overnight, but was sent home the following morning. Re-admitted Wednesday morning at about 8.30am. Finally able to start pushing at 7.20pm, daughter born at 8.41pm. She was back to back, her shoulder got stuck when she was partway out, but she was (and is) beautiful. She weighed 9lb 4oz, and even though I was a size 10 at the time, I didn't tear or need a cut. I had three stitches internally, for a graze. She was four days late.
Son number one was born five weeks early, due to medical problems. He has Down's Syndrome and was born with four major birth abnormalities that required surgery the same day. I went into labour at 7.30am, but the cord came down into the birth canal, and my son's head was not engaged. I had too much amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios), and if my waters had broken, his head would have crushed the cord. I was raced down the corridor as I had an injection in my hand for a general anaesthetic and an emergency Caesarean. This was about 10.55am. My son weighed 5lb 2oz. He was transferred to Alder Hey via a specialist ambulance with a team of doctors and nurses on board. They gave him four hours to live, unless he survived surgery. He is now 15 years old
Son number two - labour began at 7.30 am, waters broke at 5.45pm. I went to hospital at 7.30pm. The machines said that I wasn't in labour. I disagreed. At 9pm, I was taken up to a ward as the midwife as convinced that I was not having contractions. Three major contractions later, she realised that my baby was on the way. He was born at 9.55pm. He weighed 8lb, 12.5oz. He was born on his due date.
My sister had a ten pound daughter, followed by an 8lb 7.5 oz son, both born early by a few days, both by emergency section. Her son was a planned section, but his heartbeat dropped, so he was delivered the night before the planned section.
All women are different. I thought that, as I am so likely mum in many ways, I would have quick and easy labours, but I was wrong. I was also sick right through each pregnancy, yet my sister wasn't.0
