Optimal height for TV

I'm considering mounting my TV on the wall, is there an optimum height for them? My sofa will be about 10 feet from the TV, which has a 55" screen.

The optimum height for any tv was always so that your eye level when sitting was in line with the middle of the screen.

Very few people follow this rule of thumb when wall mounting a tv however medical advice is that you should not be looking up to the tv as this can cause neck problems .

Yes, don't hang it above a fire place (especially one which is used) and don't have it so the viewer has to look up at the TV from a sitting position.

This sounds like sage advice but as you have said the vast majority ignore this rule and would have done so for many years now, so should we not be having an epidemic of bad necks by now?

Flat screens suitable for hanging on the wall haven't been around THAT long!:p

Regardless, it's more a matter of general discomfort than actual danger to health.:)

Imagine this thread in a few years time when any piece of glass (i.e. any window too) could be a viewing screen!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

We have our TV above a fireplace and so well above seated eye level. Just sitting square in a chair or on a sofa would become uncomfortable over time but we have recliner seats which overcomes that problem.

Leaving aside the questionable aesthetics, I hope your fireplace isn't in use anymore as the heat from this will do irreparable damage to your TV.
  • We have our TV above the fireplace (We don't use the fire below, costs too much :D), it's not eye level but it's also not uncomfortable to watch.

Op asked for OPTIMUM height, not for examples of those who think their TV is for hanging like a picture!:p

I've often heard that a TV should have the bottom of the screen at eye level, and a monitor should have the top of the screen at eye level.
In terms of the TV of course, that totally ignores how far you are from it! The further away, the easier it is to put the TV above the fireplace, because you're at less of an angle.
