They were for me. I challenged the penalty in court (on what I thought were solid grounds) and my £90 fixed penalty magically became a fine of £150 and £90 costs on top.

    What solid grounds were they?

To show how well informed you are there has never been a £90 ticket.

This is all rather academic because I will probably just pay up and take the punishment - however the number plate on the CoFP is presumably wrong because they entered it in their system wrongly so would they not then need to use that in court? and repeat the error on any summons?

If they repeated the error and it was highlighted to them they could correct it under the slip rule which allows minor errors in court documentation to be corrected. A single character wrong in a number plate is a very minor error and the statement from the police officer will likely state the make, model and colour of your car.

The penalty will be higher in court as the CoFP is fixed but the penalties handed out by the court are means tested.

Before you do anything hasty, ask your question on pepipoo as previously advised. For a start, the slip rule is English law so you need to find out if there is an equivalent in Scotland.

Solid enough that I thought it worthwhile challenging it with a reasonable chance of success.

Maybe I got the amount wrong. Perhaps it was £60. Does it matter?

Not that solid then, shows what you know about the law 3/5 of fa. You only had to show a reasonable doubt.
