Ooh I forgot no council tax or water to pay! Extra £150 spare :j

I am amazed how much we've got left for jan. I'm self employed and saved up £500 for the two weeks I've taken off. Still got £455 left! Sooo hoping this pattern lasts, debts being chipped away and money left over for the odd treat for the kids. Jan will be tight but manageable. First Christmas ever not to be put on credit cards :T

Also, there's no Council Tax or Water Rates to pay in January.

I pay my council tax over 10 months, with no payments in February and March. I wish mine wasn't due in January.
  • am oooookkkkkkkish.

I will essentially squeak through, decided to cut down on lots re shopping, not expecting to go out and am hoping to make a big payment on my CC.

    fingers crossed!
    Nevertheless she persisted.
  • It's usually ok but this time it's going to be tough.

Christmas was budgeted for and I don't like shopping so none of that sales nonsense but other things need sorting.

I plan to pretend my purse doesn't exist except for food shop day.:)

My DMP review in January, just waiting for the update gas and electric bills since I dared actually give them the real readings.

No spare dosh, but being on a DMP is not meant to be easy, and the car is playing up so trying to avoid big bills, bit planning to do more walking and cycling anyway and that will help keep the fuel bill down a bit.

So in summary, I'm not actually sure what jan brings, but it will be better than last jan when we literally ran out of money - hence DMP
Debt -it's a fight that I'm winning, dealing with debt one day at a time.

  • We'll be fine in January money-wise but I do feel that Jan is always a calmer, quieter month for us anyway. I think after the excesses of December, we look forward to a simpler time in January. As a PP said we enjoy less flamboyant food such as soups and stews. I quite enjoy it as I see it as a time for renewal and reenergising.

  • January will be fine for us, just a usual month! For the last few years I have saved up throughout the year for Christmas so all spends on the cc for gifts/food/social activities will come out of savings. I have a couple of social events planned but still have around £200 of disposable income for the rest of the month.

  • Jan will be quite tight for us. I'd been really sensible and budgeted for Christmas in advance, but in the last week have crashed my car (which will set me back £250 insurance excess, plus goodness knows how much for a higher renewal premium which is due in Jan), and have also shattered the screen on my brand new iphone (quoted £80 - £180 for a replacement, ouch). Oh and have also overspent on recent home renovations, so have £1500 on the credit card.

On the plus side I've drawn up a plan and will be on track again by end of Feb. :)

darcyboo have you considered either looking on ebay for a replacement phone or taking out a mobile ins (I think there is protect my bubble and a few others) leaving it for a little while then making a claim? I shattered my phone screen, paid out £100 but then afterwards thought it wasn't worth all that money!

  • I might be okay, my OH is going away for a week so I'm hoping whatever savings can be made I can pay off my debt! I need this to be done by february so I can spend the rest of the year saving..
