I currently am staying with my aunt. She is on BT total package with a 10gb limit. She has just received a bill listing her broadband use as sept 15gb, oct 25gb and nov 80gb. I have tried to complain, just to be told that dec is 225gb (to date) they can offer no explanation just I am using 20gb a day!!
What can I do??:o

It depends on how techy you are. You can monitor your real usage if you know how to log into your router and then discover where the data is going and maybe dispute it with BT.
Had a similar issue with a relative when her granddaughter stayed and started streaming movies bigtime. But she is with Plusnet where you can monitor and cap your usage in a very clear way so it got sorted quickly. Maybe your aunt should move to Plusnet once you are over the immediate crisis?

Watching Iplayer and other TV shows online? Watching in HD not standard definition?

10GB will soon be used up.

They can offer no explanation, we'll if the usage increased the same time you moved in, then the explanation is clear, your usage is way in excess of the 10Gb that was sufficient when you didn't live there, the solution is to upgrade to an unlimited package with your current provider or with a new provider, and perhaps you paying the difference in cost

On the cheapest Plusnet deal you get 5GB, once you reach the limit it slows down to 256 kbps so does not cut you off. You can also set a higher monthly limit but you only pay for that if you use it. Great for a low user who needs to control costs.

You haven't said how you use the internet, so it's impossible to say if these figures sound reasonable or not.

Not every one is clued up enough to use proper security & passwords
Have your heard of gary mckinnon? All he did was try his luck with factory default pass words, and well you decide

One of my neighbours a long time ago got a sharp lesson in router security

BT Wifi routers are delivered with a preset fairly secure random password these days, so unless the password has been 'lent' to a neighbour, freeloading seems unlikely.
