MBNA Issue with Default

Hi All

I am hoping some of you can shed some light on whats happening here on this, as I really do not want to phone them.

I had a Virgin Mastercard (owned by MBNA), well managed for years. But got into trouble whhen i lost my business (have found work since, but then my partners hours were reduced at work)
I have been on a payment arrangement with them since April (only secured after alot of stress and tears)

I recieved a default notice on the account in September. I went to pay my normal payment online and my online account access was refused and told I had to call. I have opted not too and have been paying my normal agreed payment via the bank details given on the back of the statement, because the last thing I want to do is to stop paying them.

I am concerned I have not heard what they are doing with my account, nor are they sending me any updates as to what my balance is.

Has anyone else experienced this or can anyone offer any advice on what to do?

they maybe either passing you to a dca or selling the account. Why not call them.
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • Everytime I call them, they get abusive, rude and they generally try to bully me into paying more than I can afford, but calling them isn't cheap,
CAB advised to only deal with them in writing. I just find it a bit strange that its been 3 months since the account defaulted and i've still not heard what they are doing

Providing you continue to meet the payments under the ARP then the status quo may well be maintained. There's no benefit passing you onto a DCA.
  • Write to them with a CCA request. Useful on pre April 2007 debts as if they don't have it, or it has errors, can't get a CCJ if defended. Also comes with a statement of account.

Alternatively, write to them for a statement. Under OFT debt collection guidelines they are obliged to send this on request.

I would only write, for the reasons you mention.

Does your credit report show a default or arrangement?

What's the rest of your credit file like? Arrangements can screw it for a longer period than a default.

    Good luck

  • My credit file isn't brilliant because of the afore motioned factors and I can't check it again as I cannot afford to drop the £15 to view it at the moment.
When I last was able to check it a few months ago it didn't seem to say anything about an arrangement on it. This was before the default but they were recorded as green payments.
Thanks for the info on the arrangements, I didn't realise they could do more damage than a default in the long term.

I just find it strange. I had another card with Mbna that defaulted a couple of years ago and I almost instantly for a letter from the company they sold it too and a letter from Mbna telling me what they had done.
  • You can check noddle for free, it's the least used (call credit) but has all my accounts on it.

Hi. I've had the exact same issue as you but a little more extreme. I have posted about it only today so couldn't believe the exact same thing has happened to someone else!
I owed £11,500 on an Alliance and Leicester credit card which was transferred to MBNA. When my circumstances went mental out of the blue, I wrote to them and asked them to freeze the interest and agree a payment plan. I got a random letter back saying that doing this wouls affect my credit rating. They didn't say yes or no. They also said they couldn't find my credit agreement and so couldn't take me to court. Very random.
I was frightened and so I just kept paying, from 2011 until now. I've never had one phone call or letter. So today someone on the forum told me to register with Noddle, for free, and there it was. I've almost paid it all back.
For info, my credit file shows a default but not an arrangement.

The credit agreements from A&L accounts transferred to MBNA seem to have had a nasty accident. They couldn't find mine either and I gave a letter to confirm that. Taken out about 2001 I think

I'll go give this noddle a try!

I'm sort of glad I'm not alone (obviously I'd rather no one be in this situation)
So it seems I'm just best to write to ask for my cca and just keep paying?
  • Ah can't use noddle at the moment because I've just got married. Will have to try again in a few months apparently
