Why are you making suggestions if you haven't read any of this thread?

As others have already said, no UK PAYG sim requires monthly topups.

Giffgaff is one of the most expensive virtual networks around for light users, so no point in OP trying it.

    Potential options:

If vodafone has good coverage, consider Ovivo (200 minutes, 300 texts and 500mb free each month, but you pay £20 one-off for sim and there are adverts when browsing). No suitable for OP as he doesn't want adverts, but included for the benefit of others reading this thread

Otherwise Three 321 (calls 3p per minute, texts 2p per minute, data 1p per mb)

If VF and Three signals are poor, try White Mobile (on EE network) calls 3p per minute (landline) 5p per minute (mobile), free (within network), texts 5p (free within network), data (2.5p per mb)

Giffgaff (on EE network) is completely uncompetitive (unless you use enough for a bundle to be worthwhile). Calls 10p per minute, texts 6p, data (20p for up to 20mb, and 20p per mb after that) calls/texts free within network

    1. giffgaff is based on o2 not EE but I do agree that call rates are not5 that good as Ovivo (that I am with at the moment) but although Ovivo was mention before he would like to avoid advertising so you should also read posts ;)
    2. it is obvious that all payng does not not required monthly top up
    3. with giffgaff you can top up anytime you want but to get better deal you can buy goody bags for 30 days (but no need to renew every 30 days)
    4. ie. with hockey cockey goody bag you can get extra minute for every minute of incoming calls (60 minutes includes in goody bag +300 txt) and it costs £5 only per month. Also you can cancel your contract anytime.
    5. not to mention international rates
6 Three offer 3p/2p/1p is much worse than £7.50 from giffgaff (200/unlimited txt/250mb)

No it isn't. OP said they typically spend less than one pound on their current tariff, so the three deal is much better for them.
  • if you know how much min/txt/data you need... with three deal i would pay circa £15, with giffgaff £7.50 but I am with Ovivo (don't mind advertising) so I do not pay anything.

The question is not how much you would pay, but how much the OP would pay.

Sounds as if poor Brun is not capable of reading anyone's posts.
He didn't read mine or the OPs :-)

Can the op not get a replacement sim from their existing supplier, it should then be of a type to fit a modern phone (or cut the existing sim to fit). The only problem will be data usage which a (low use) payg contract is not really suitable for. I have a modern phone on payg but have data switched off relying on wifi for internet use.
  • That's one hell of a jump in technology from 20 year old phone to an iphone.I guess you will be ready for another upgrade in 2034

A 4FF nano-SIM is 12% thinner than a 2FF mini-SIM or 3FF micro-SIM, i.e. it is smaller in all three dimensions. Therefore you cannot cut a larger SIM to a nano-SIM. Although a hand-cut nano-SIM can be forced into an iPhone 5 or 5S, this has the potential to invalidate the warranty as they can get stuck.
