Carers allowance still exists. Your savings are ignored for CA. But any income from work is counted.

If you claim carers allowance, the person you're caring for, their severe disability premium stops.

Severe Disability premium? what is that? on what benefit?

also I know about the "any income from work is counted", but for how long. Say I sustained myself for 1 year or even 2 years (thought 2 years I would not be able to do) are they going to say, oi! where that £14k from work 2 years ago!!

A person is entitled to the severe disability premium within income based benefits if no-one lives with them (there are a few expections) and no-one receives carers allowance for them. They also need to be on mid or high rate care DLA.

The income thing is based on what you're earning now.

The person you care for may be receiving the severe disability premium with their ESA if the following apply:
    Severe disability premium

You or your partner must satisfy all of the following:
    • be receiving the care component of disability living allowance (middle or higher rate), attendance allowance, daily living component of the personal independence payment or armed forces independence payment
    • live alone (there are exceptions to this rule - For more information see our Disability Rights Handbook.)
    • no one else must be getting carer's allowance for looking after you
If they are receiving this then it would be taken away because you are receiving Carer's Allowance for them.

Also, redundancy money is not taxable (up to £30000)

Having reread your post I see you are caring for someone at home. If this is the case then they are not living alone and will not be receiving the severe disability premium.

For how long is your mortgage going to be paid? This will make a difference to how long your redundancy money will last.

did you calculate your redundancy payout? click this for the redundancy pay calculator .
is it really redundancy (that means your post is being stopped and no one else will have that job title/post/position otherwise it's not redundancy it's something else)
Click here to find out your rights regarding being made redundant.
If it was me in this position I WOULD CLAIM FOR EVERYTHING and then at least they will know your situation and that way when you get to the point when you NEED to claim there won't be all this 'why didn't you claim before?' 'how have you supported yourself until now?' 'why didn't you tell us earlier'

The person I care for claims ESA - Support Group and DLA (Middle Rate).

You need to claim CA to start with.

It would be worth putting several scenarios into one of the benefit checkers - https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/benefits-check

CA and a part-time job might be the way to go if the person you're caring for doesn't need someone around all the time.

Thank you. However, I am not too worried about the technicality of the redundancy as long as my mortgage will be paid for a while, after then I will have to either look at getting the interest payments and make up the rest. Even take a part time job if I need to top up but for now, for right now I will be total carer. The redundancy money is correct. I did check that. If they want to classify if as redundancy and then that job not be there afterwards then that's not my beef but it is so easy for companies to do this now and then re-employ. All they have got to say is the business has changed and give it a new job title and even then no one would be any wiser unless I said, "Oi!" that's my job and take them to a ET. But even so, an agreement stops me from doing that so they know they are safe. I could deny the redundancy and then have to carry on working there but who's to say in 2. 3, 4 months they will sack me. If they want rid of you, its not difficult. I rather take the money and do what I said that I would do if this ever happened. and it has. I have worked non stop since I was 17, im 40 now but that does not mean a thing no more to government. :(
